Agreed, a raised walkway mounted on telegraph poles from the sustainable pine forests of the Troodos Mountains (thanks to the Cyprus Forestry Department!)

I think the trade off here though will be to bring the beauty of the archeology to the masses. If people don't know about it - they generally won't care too much about it. Many people don't know how to access the sites or even know they are there - especially the one across from the mall. I think it will open it up for many more people to see and enjoy.

I agree .......... and it’s only recently that I’ve seen people working on the excavations in that area!

I've been visiting for 20 years and only found out about the site across from the Mall recently - probably because of something mentioned on here. I'm looking forward to having a look-see when I'm back.

Yes, I agree with these comments from people who say that they didn't know anything about these archaeological sites. The blame for the lack of information is down to 2 Govt Depts. The Cyprus Tourism Organisation and the Antiquities Branch. Both seem to stick to their rigid guidelines. The CTO like to get tourists on their organised excursions by bus, I think. As do the local tour guides. But there is scant mention if things which tourists might do by themselves, if they knew! The antiquities dept seem more concerned with excavations by certain foreign universities who come here with their proffessors and archaeological students in most cases annually to give their students practical experience while working on their designated digs. Some have been coming here for years.Their other concern is now protecting these sites from illegal use by metal detectorists and others who try to break in to steal things. This is very worrying and a sad state of affairs. However its time that they also considered the prospects of opening up some of these interesting sites to tourists, though they need to be accompanied by guides who can explain what they are looking at.
Maybe the walkway will help in this, but they wil probably have to view these sites from a distance, rather than treading the ground on the site to get a closer view of excavations.

As you can probably tell I take a keen interest in archaeology, helping as a volunteer when needed.

A very thought provoking post there Dee, thanks.

I must say that on all my visits to Paphos over the years, on the days that we weren't yomping up in the hills for 8 to 10 miles, followed by beers and a nice lunch, I'd be armed with my CTO Paphos Town Map and going it alone for a couple of hours.

The Antiquities and Archaelogical sites in Kato Paphos are so numerous, and absolutely amazing to witness at ground level, you feel part of a 2000 year history (or more!) as you stroll around. All so close together as well...
