I am sure the Motorway is well older than 14 years.

The Paphos section of the motorway (A6) wasn't completed until 2006. For many years it stopped at Pissouri.

It looks like Google Earth may be wrong as well their 2002 photograph shows the Motorway coming into Paphos. The date is at the top left

The Motorway opened already Juli 2002 and the ready plans of the route were much older... while the excavation was 2002/2003 and later,
actually the Israelis working on site recently...

Thanks Max I thought it had been open for quite a while. I remember using it to Paphos when we stayed in Pissouri

Using Google Earth you can compare 2002 with 2017 on the site.

It looks like they were building a main road (not the A6) through the area, but abandoned / relocated it.

In fairness to Kili01, she didn't actually mention the A6, she mentioned a "new highway".

The top picture is today, the bottom 2002, according to Google Earth.

And looking at the bottom figure, it looks like there was something below the site that also used to be a building, which is now a playground.

I was merely quoting a Greek web site:

"The A6 highway (locally referred to as the Limassol - Paphos highway, Greek: νέος δρόμος Λεμεσού - Πάφου) marked the ending of an ambitious government project to link all the main cities on the island with modern 4 lane, high speed, highways. It is 66km long and is free of any at-grade intersections. It links Limassol, the largest port (and second largest city) on the island, and Paphos, the top tourist destination on the island. It was completed in 2006"

Sorry for mis-quoting............

Ah I see now. It was completed when the Pissouri area 'missing link' was put in..

Yes, in my earlier post I was referring to the A6. At that time the part of the motorway from Limassol to Pissouri, was completed and in use. But the missnig part was the final piece which connected Paphos to Pissouri and beyond.
As far as I know the original plan for the new highway was to route it along the valley, ie much closer to Gereskipou. As I said the discovery of the marble tomb by the bulldoser driver caused the Antiquities Dept to tell the Govt and the contractors building the new road to stop for 6 mths while they excavated the site. Then it was decided to re route the highway to its present position higher up which meant that the site could be left undisturbed. Sorry, I didn't say in my first post that I was talking about the A6. I thought most people would realuse that as there is still only 1 major highway that terminates at the roundabout outside Paphos!

Are you sure about that though? The picture from 2002 shows a complete motorway. The road being built on the site looks more like a local one.

Fact is that the Motorway to Paphos was finished July 2002. The plans for it many years earlier :!:
As the image from 2002 Google Earth shows there was nowhere any space for a highway through the North of Yeroskipou. Even the Department of Antiquities mentioned a local road started at Ayioi Pente district was responsible for the destruction of the site.

"Wikipedia" which is normally a reliable source, shows that the A6 Motorway was already finished in 1997 :!:

MORAL: don't believe everything you read in Wikipedia, or anything else for that matter.

I think the issue here is, different people have different ideas about what "completed" means.

From what I can gather, the final piece in the puzzle that makes up the A6 motorway (a junction to Troodos) was completed in 2006. However, the motorway was open long before that. It just didn't have all the trimmings. The photo shows a working motorway in 2002, and various articles mention the late 90s.

However, it is all a bit beside the point isn't it?

Imagine what fun we would all have with satellite images or maps going back 2000 years? That would be paradise. :)

Weren't the fly-overs in Limassol the latest additions to the highway?
