A new webcam has been added!

Post by Dominic »

Finally got around to setting up the webcam in Polemi. I may move it slightly but you can at least see what the weather is like now. :)

Nice one, Dom! But howzabout fixing it to the furthest power pole, so that the eyesore poles and overhead cables are not in the webcam field of view?

Cheers- AL :?

Three reasons:

1. The wireless signal wouldn't get picked up.
2. The power line would have to go over a road.
3. It isn't our pole.

Besides, given that most people use the webcams to check the weather, I don't think they will object to a telegraph pole or two. Perhaps I should hang a bit of seaweed close to the webcam, so it can be used as an aid?

The clarity is excellent compared to the other webcams.

Could it be an age thing?

It is exceptionally clear. I wonder if some of the others have lens that are blurring a bit from all the sand and dust blowing around. Similar to how our headlights suffer.

Yes, I would imagine, for two reasons. First, an older camera wouldn't have the resolution of a newer one. Secondly, an older camera would have picked up dust and dirt etc.

Agreed with fellow posters, Dom- the clarity, focus and definition of your new Polemi webcam is really stunning, thanks!

The furthest pole, the one with the "Danger of Death" sign on it, and support cables left and rear, appears to be the main EAC incomer on common ground over the road from you. From the right, you can see 5 heavy 3 phase cables (3 x Pos, Neg and Earth) coming into it ¾ of the way up, hence the pole supports.

A 2 phase supply is taken off to the pole on the right, presumably on your property? A second (different) 2 phase supply runs off to the left, a neighbours house maybe?

Quick question for you please: At the TOP of the EAC pole are 3 cables coming in from the right and vanishing out to the left. Where do these go, I wonder? Two more adjacent houses? I'm intrigued now...

Cheers- AL :?

The three cables at the top of the pole are the High Voltage ones. The other 5 coming in from the right will (I believe) come from a transformer..

Thanks Trev. So am I right in thinking that the three HV cables at the top are Earth, Neutral and 440 volts +ve, and then a local transformer then splits the 440 volts +ve into three delta single phase 230v supplies?

If so, I think the 5 cables running from lower down the main pole off to the right are a 3 phase supply to another of Dom's neighbours, a restaurant perhaps, or a mansion with big fat A/C units?

No- read you wrong, sorry. Talking outa my rectum again... Getting the setup now

Why don't you start a separate thread on telegraph pole schenanigans, and discuss it there?

There's even a website.

Ah but Dominic :-) They are Telegraph poles, not Electricity Poles ha ha... As you know because phone lines are so dangerous here, they go in pipes underground :-)

Love the webcam by the way and knowing exactly where it is, is good

That website doesn't judge. It accepts both.

The pole on the left to the pole on the right are carrying overhead EAC 2 phase powerlines to your property, Dominic, NOT Cyta telegraph/phone lines.

Please bear with me while a cunning plan in my mind hopefully evolves... AL :)

I know exactly what they are. I can't believe that anybody would find them an interesting topic of conversation though. The Telegraph Pole Appreciation link was just gentle, subtle comedy. Too subtle obviously.

MM we could just remove the free webcams, maybe you could offer a newer model or two, but be warned they are expensive and have to be maintained. The one from my house is about thirteen years old, you would look faded in that time. None of CL old Web cameras are HD only SD maybe Doms is an HD version? still, for many years, we kept them going and still do for this forum. Happy to get a newer HD web camera all offers considered MM.

Thanks for the warning re. the costs Allesley.

I'm afraid my pockets are not deep enough to
offer a cam or two.

I'm lucky to have 1 TV and 1 old pc.

I'm just a poor pensioner ;)

I would say that for a 13 year old piece of I.T kit it performs exceptionally well.
