Meals and Petrol Cheap

Hi All,
just returned from another short break in the TRNC. We filled up ready for our drive back. It worked out at 0.87 cents a litre!!

In a really classy restaurant, three course meal with free coffee at the end worked out at €28.00 for two of us.

We also ate in a couple of other restaurants with even lower prices. However we could not fault the ambience and service. Eating whilst overlooking a bay and watching the waves gently roll onto the sandy beach.

We shall be going there again.

As a matter of interest whereabouts was the restaurant?

Where's the sense in spending €0-87 a litre in fuel, just to drive all that distance for a meal that costs similar to just down the road from you? AL

I am not sure where the idea it was a Taverna came from.

That came from me, sorry... In Paphos and surrounds, I always tend to class Tavernas and Restaurants as one of the same thing. If I'm wrong, then I offer my humblest apologies.

We've had some great meals in the North, and really good value too. In fact, the current exchange rate from either Euros or Sterling to Turkish Lira seems to be quite advantageous.

You're missing the point PaphosAL, you wouldn't drive all that way to have a nice meal & get some cut-price fuel! You would go there to have a nice break for a couple of days or so, in different surroundings, enjoy the local eating places & subsequently get a benefit from the cheaper fuel costs. Nobody is saying there aren't some nice places along the Chlorakas coast!

There are very few seafront restaurants on the Chloraka coast full stop and I would think none, other than a very basic taverna would offer a 3 course meal for two for less than 30 euros - it is not clear whether the cost first mentioned included drinks, but for any restaurant meal including a bottle of wine in the south of Cyprus I would expect to pay around 50 euros for that sort of meal.

We visit the north of the land regularly and although we have not eaten at the recommended restaurant, we do constantly find it much better value for money in terms of eating/drinking than the south, although I have lived here over 20 years and definitely would not like to live in the north for various reasons, we will continue to visit there and the Turkish mainland for holidays and short breaks as it offers such excellent value for money (and also since our Cyprus phones don't work once over the border, it's a nice break from work and other stresses!)

I have to wonder when Paphos Al was last here (on either side of the island) to expect to pay so little for a meal....

We love going "oop norf" when we come to Cyprus. Usually stay in Pia Bella hotel in Girne or Kirenia.

It has a different atmosphere to Paphos.

Agreed that things are cheaper there but that is not why we go.

We just enjoy the change. Same goes for Ayia Napa or Farmagusta. It is just different.

Then you might be wrong, Trev... I was paying €2-40 for a large bottle of Carslberg in Alexanders Bar, Tefkrou St at night, and €3-50 for same at Riccos Beach in the afternoon.

I didn't mind the extra cost at RB. It was worth it, just to be so close to the sea, enjoy the sight of all his ducks and geese running around. Not to mention his man-made black cannons, with loads of sparrows nesting inside, LOL!

We'll be staying in Alcencak in a couple of weeks and, while we love living where we do in the south, we really enjoy the break for a few days in the North. The change of scenery, the lovely people, the different choices on the menu, the fact that we can pack our car and just take off. It makes a nice change a couple of times a year, and to see no graffiti for 6 days!!

From your posts I can see your heart really is in Cyprus and this post makes it clear you're not happy in Luton. Why don't you move to Cyprus before the Brexit drawbridge is pulled up on you and you lose the opportunity?

I can understand where you are coming from, kansas, and wish you and yours a really nice enjoyable break. Why not take some piccies up there and share them here on PL afterwards?

Many of my expat friends in Paphos used to suffer from 'Small Island Syndrome'. A condition whereby people living there felt kind of 'trapped'. Two or three times a year, they would book holidays to Crete, Malta, Jordan. Even Cruises of the Greek Islands...

So yes, now I take it all into perspective (ignoring 43 year old political schisms), if the borders are legally open- go and enjoy a change! After all, you'll be a tourist, not a politician!
