First Past the Post system is the answer...
UKIP = 4 millions votes, 1 MP
SNP = 1½ million votes, 56 MPs
Lib Dems = 2½ million votes, 8 MPs
etc.
I don't think anybody has ever claimed that everyone that wanted to leave the EU was a UKIP supporter did they...? Clearly, many people still vote tribaly even though the party they vote for in the GE doesn't represent their views on the EU...
