General Hospital versus Private
Re: General Hospital versus Private
A friend of mine is on attempt no 3 for her replacement hip. Both the previous ops were infected. She lives in UK, so it can happen anywhere.

Re: General Hospital versus Private
There is a lot of generalisation about the benefits of Private verses the General Hospital in Cyprus. Fortunately I have not had to use either of these so I can't comment although I do use a private Gp and found her brilliant. But one thing that I can honestly say that the treatment my family have had back in the Uk from the NHS has been brilliant. And let's be honest we never really here all of the good things that happen. My son has had brilliant treatment when he was rushed into intensive care And put on life support after he had total organ failure over 2 years ago. All of the staff were brilliant at a very stressful time.
After spending 3 weeks in total in hospital. And having to receive dialysis as his kidneys stopped working. I cannot fault the utter care and dedication from all of the staff. After a few days out of hospital he was rushed back in with a suspected embolism on his lungs due to his immobilisation in a hospital bed for so long , once again I cannot fault the care he was given and still to this day he is still receiving the same care as he now has long term health problems.
We hear of a lot of bad things about the Uk NHS but I for one take my hat of to them.

I have good stories and bad about the UK NHS, like most things. The biggest problem they have though is the attitude of some of the general public. I was always appalled at the amount of missed appointments on display whenever I visited a GP or hospital. And when you hear the tales of time wasters in A&E, it makes the proverbial blood boil.

Darrow,
Yes it can happen anywhere, EXCEPT that I was left with two oozing sinuses in my leg, which I had to dress twice a day, and a refusal from The General to do anything more about it. That's the difference.

I'm sure if funds were available we would all have private medical insurance, but at some point you will need the local General even if you pay the high premiums for the privilege, as you age this will become ever increasing cost's of Private health cover, so get used to the General, it does have good points that are for sure excellent.
Those of us who are on limited funds living here will not have a choice.

Re: General Hospital versus Private
Ixs that true? Does health insurance cost in the UK rise because of age? Or only because of medical inflation?
Re: General Hospital versus Private
Im sure if everyone could afford it, the Private Hospitals would be everyone's first port of call, but Ive have experience of both, and the Public Hospitals here are very good in my opinion.
Re: General Hospital versus Private
I believe they are talking about Private Health Insurance in Cyprus Jeba not the UK and yes it unfortunately does increase with age as you are considered to be a bigger risk! Additionally pre-existing conditions are also normally not covered. When we first came to Cyprus in 2003 many of the British then were quite well off and could afford private health care but when the masses started coming - circa 2003 many like us were not wealthy and were just following their dream of an early retirement in the sun. Unfortunately for many the dream did not last - for some it was too much of the cheap booze, for many it was missing their families and finding it was not as cheap as they thought and there was little work available to help hence all the cowboy experts!

“A wound sinus is a discharging blind-ended tract that extends from the surface of an organ to an underlying area or abscess cavity”. (Medical defn.)
You can a sinus virtually anywhere on your body.

I don't mind posting that with prime insurance (pitsas) we pay circa 150 euros per month for joint cover with an 800 euro excess ( opposite Debenhams at the roundabout) Free annual medical and free life cover of 6000 euros included.
We however had no pré-existing medical conditions at the time the policy commenced, we are both above 65 years old. The policy was commenced 7 years ago we have friends with the same policy who have had no issues claiming.
We had BOC cover prior to Prime which was 4 times the cost!!!
Up till now we have paid privately or used the General hospital as treatment costs were below 800 euros.

Got a feeling regarding cheap insurance policy's, when the time comes that you need it......the,but it's written in the small print, will be heard.
Re: General Hospital versus Private
Strange comment and unfounded.........
As I stated my friends have had no issues, the 800 euro excess brings the cost down. Prime Insurance are very highly regarded.
Re: General Hospital versus Private
Why is it strange, I'm sure you like me have spoken to people who have had issues when trying to claim on insurance polices..health care is very expensive ...so when getting cover make sure what you will be entitled too.
Re: General Hospital versus Private
To repeat, my friends have claimed, in fact several times.
I posted to demonstrate that health cover needn't cost a fortune, if you agree to a high excess!!!!
