BBQ Area

I am planning to build a BBQ area and am looking for some inspiration or design ideas! It will include both gas and charcoal, a traditional kleftico oven, storage and a sink. Pictures would be great.

Must say that I prefer beachcaster's solution to the Kleftiko oven, a seperate standalone item nearby your BBQ feature, if you actually want a kleftiko oven, that is... Not so sure about the colour he painted it, though, LOL!

Never seen both combined in one common BBQ design, but I stand to be corrected!

Very impressive , do you post your steaks through the letter boxes at the front and they come out at the other end cooked ?

I thought they were toilet roll holders; a sort of rather informal napkin dispenser.

We just brought our standalone Cyprus BBQ back with us and we can plonk it wherever we feel like. We toyed with a Kleftiko oven in the early days of arriving in Cyprus but after attending many Friday nights at Frixo's bar and enjoying the free souvla, we decided the simple method was the way to go for us.

Obviously, we loved ours because it came back with us in our shipping container!

This is one in good use, not as a show item. I always start the fire with some dried woody herbs like oregano or sage, rosemary, to continue with small kindling and then wood and try to avoid charcoal. There are skewer big enough for a whole suckling pig. Electricity is nearby for a hairdryer to use, OK the sink is only with cold water, but one cannot have everything. The wood ash I use afterwards in the garden as fertilizer...and in case I want to go for a picnic BBQ to the beach, I take the standalone unit with me in the car...

Yes AL you are correct.
The oven is loaded with kindling then graduated carob pieces then carob logs. The chimney cap is removed before lighting and of course the door left open. When the larger logs are burning they are spread around the back and sides in the oven, allowing the pizza stone to sit inside and door left open.
Pizza on a paddle and Bob`s your uncle. The mozaic tiles cover the track of carbon left by the burning and are easily wiped clean.
As a kleftiko the chimney cap and door are closed for the cooking time. MMMMMMMmmmmmmm.

Many thanks for confirming my theory, Alan, for that is all it was, a theory. But it might entice other PL members to build / install a Kleftiko/Pizza oven alongside their BBQ, and explore some more exquisite alfresco dining experiences...

HOT TIP: Paint it terracota, for that authentic look, LOL!

Now, let's leave it to Max and/or Devil to explain how Kleftiko actally came about in Cypriot history, please...

Kleftiko means stolen, and I was told that back in the day, lambs would be stolen, and a pit dug out, and the lamb would then be cooked in the covered pit, hidden from view, I was told this by a Cypriot, anyone else got another take on this?
