Mark I think you and your visitors are generalizing too much about cleanliness in the UK. I agree there are some awful places but also some absolutely beautiful parts of the country that are weli maintained. All visitors that I have met in this beautiful part of the country ( Northumberland) agree that it is outstanding. It is very difficult to compare a small island like Cyprus with somewhere the size of the UK and all the industrial sites there.

I recollect rare newts or something similar Dominic, the Capital is available for completion, but environmental studies are ongoing.

People in the UK certainly seem to respect the countryside (that they haven't built on) more than a lot of people in Cyprus, though that is changing. Ten years ago when we first started visiting Cyprus, just about every corner on the more mountainous roads would have been converted to a fly-tip. That is less frequent now.

However, Cypriots seem to take a lot more pride in the front of their houses. We have all seen pavements hosed down etc. Compare that to the UK, when it snowed on our street, only two people (myself and one other neighbour) bothered to shovel the snow from the pavement and the road in front of them. And I don't think anybody would sweep the pavement outside during the summer, at least not in my neck of the woods.

Rare animals can be a pain! In Surrey Heath, there are a lot of SSSIs because of daft birds that haven't yet learned to build their nests in trees. Because of this, their habitat gets protected. No wonder they are rare though! Sometimes evolution needs to be allowed to take it's course.

Cannot honestly see any environmental issues as regards building a dual carriageway road bridge over the lower end of the Ezousa River outflow, west of PFO. After all, the river will still be free to send it's nice fresh mountain water straight out into the salty Med... (What a waste!)

And the newts will still be happy in their river habitat, surely? Cheers- AL
