iPhone internet problem

Visiting from UK, but I can't get my iPhone 7 logged into any of the local Cyprus carriers. Setting is on 'automatic', and the carrier's name (MTN) appears at top followed by 'E', which I guess means no connection. Tried disabling 'automatic' and selecting other carriers, without success. It occasionally works, but is terribly slow, and won't handle anything heavy like photos or attachments.

'Mobile Data' is on, 4G is enabled, and 'Roaming' is on. Never had problem like this in Cyprus before, & nobody else around me seems to be having a problem. I used the same phone here on roaming in July, and in Canada in August, without any issues.

Any thoughts?

Who is your UK network?

Maybe contact them - a while back (we are with Three) they changed their 'roaming partner' and we had severe problems getting any sort of signal for a few days.

I think you'll find that the "E" refers to the Mobile Data connection speed (Edge) rather than the mobile phone carrier signal and In terms of mobile data, Edge is about the lowest connection speed there is. If you are showing "MTN" then surely you are connected to their mobile network?

JB - Thanks. UK provider is O2 - little point trying to contact them from here (especially without internet, except occasional wifi), but will when I get back to UK - especially if the roaming charges are high!

Oxfordboy - Thanks. Yes, I guess I am connected, and similarly to PrimeTel, which I have occasionally found. But your helpful definition of 'E' does explain something: yes, there may be a connection but it's almost non-existent.

Happy-in-Cyprus - Thanks, if I'm in town I might do that.

I'll probably just have to be patient, as I'm only here another ten days, though for me it's a frustrating and unusual problem. Wifey arrives this afternoon, and she has one of these little wifi gizmos, so that will help!

Mobile networks have a number of data connection speeds, GPRS, which is the slowest but was normal until 10 years ago.... it can actually carry very small amounts of data, EDGE, signified by the E, was the forerunner of 3G and does, normally, carry data, albeit slow.... if it is a decent edge connection, you can send and receive emails.... Next is 3G, then 4G.

If your connection isn’t decent, try putting a phone into Airplane mode, until the carrier connection shown below it, dissapears, then take Airplane off. This forces a reconnection with the Cell site and ‘may’ then connect at a higher speed. In theory, phones should do this automatically, but I have found myself doing it a lot... to improve connection or even to gain a data connection.

If this doesn’t work, it may be that the roaming network isn’t allowing decent connection, as their contract with your host operator is in dispute....

Presume you've tried the traditional method of turning it off completely and restarting???

There shouldn't be any roaming charges since the new EU rules ...
