Looking for an Electrician

I have a number of electrical jobs that need doing in my house in the Universal (mainly installing extra power points) and am looking for a good electrician. Any recommendations would be welcome. (I also want a new front door fitting so I also need a builder/carpenter). Thanks

Marios is a very reliable and skilled electrician. Cannot give his details presently as I am in the UK. However Allesley will know who I am talking of and could possibly help you with his details so if he sees this post might well assist. Marios is a qualified electrician and has done seveeral jobs for me and friends all of whom have expressed satisfaction with his work as do I and he is very reasonable. As a qualified Electrician and Fire Alarm Engineer (retired), and seeing many typical Cypriot houses in varying stages of construction over the years, a shiver goes up my spine when people over there are talking about adding more power sockets...

Case study: Dimitri, a good Cypriot friend of mine, was having his traditional stone-built villa being constructed just outside Amargeti village. His Electrician (who lived on top of the hill opposite) had laid all the plastic conduit pipes around the concrete floor to feed the power sockets, but was only half way through pulling the ring main cables through, when he was called away on an emergency...

First thing next morning, the screeders turned up and levelled 2" of cement over the floors, ready for tiling. To this day, Dimitri has three non-working power sockets around his lounge!

Adding sockets to a more usual house in Cy would normally mean cutting chases in the wall nearest the existing socket, and extending the ring main (ie, out and back, so not a spur) from there. Here's the bit that makes you cringe...

Imagine what's behind that wall. A thin skim of plaster (maybe), a thin skim of concrete, then adobe blocks full of holes. Electrician's worst nightmare! Especially making good afterwards...

Okay, you could opt for surface mount mini-trunking and shallow patresses, but TBH, that would look soooooo DIY and naff!

But there are good electricians out here as I can vouch for with our new build. Even ones that reduce the price because some things have been deleted off the electrical plan.. Twice now I have had one spur added to two different sockets, since we moved in..

Thanks for your comments Al. That is of course why I am looking for a good electrician! (The idea of multiple extensions adapters etc terrifies me). I am hoping that the replacement of the many single sockets with doubles will solve most of the problems.

Replacing 1 gang sockets with 2 gang sockets is a far easier task for a good sparkie. You can even 'double up' by including a further 2 gang socket immediately adjacent to the first one, making four switched sockets!

Bear in mind that most manufacturers (like MK) now offer 2 gang sockets that also include 2 USB power points, handy for powering / charging your tablet, smartphone, satnav etc. So this might be worth considering. But please ask him to maintain the new cabling as a ring and NOT as spurs!

You weren't going off topic at all, m8. The OP wanted a trusty electrician AND someone who could replace his front door. This sounds like there are now two of you in this thread both looking for quality new front doors?

Thanks again for all advice. The electrical work is sorted with Martyn(and Chris) and I have found a joiner to deal with the new door : Robert Notman ("Rab")96 845598,[email protected] . Trades as Alpha Carpentry and Joinery. Contacted this morning and he has already been round to do the estimate. (I'll update the forum once work is finished).
