Good morning everyone, is it hot enough?..

Post by cyprusmax47 »

Good Morning everybody. Do you think this is the end of the very hot Summer? I do. It was very hot yesterday at the Timi Beach when I had my fish lunch at 2 pm. with 36.5 C. It is always funny to see the max. temperatures from the Paphos airport weather station reported much lower than in reality.
As my fish tavern is only 1 km from the measuring station it showed on Google and Yahoo sites only 32C the same time i was there. Very tourist friendly figures I think :roll: :lol:
Anyhow today it will be similar hot, but I think that was it with the very hot days this Summer. From tomorrow it suppose to go slowly down within the next days. As my place is higher up near Tsada Golf and normally a balanced humidity I felt quite uncomfortable last night with open windows and a steady breeze with no humidity at all <20% RH. So i went out of bed at 2 am and sprinkled water on all patios around the house which reduced the air temperature and increased the humidity at the same moment. Slightly wet I went straight back to bed and could find a nice sleep... :)

Morning Max! Quite pleasant here in Polemi. No idea what the temp is but a gentle breeze is blowing.

Seems to have been a strange August, cooler at times than expected, more cloud , breezes, and even a miniscule amount of rain, all after a very hot July! Forecast seems to reckon that August will go out on a high, so here's hoping for a really good September when we have plenty of family over from the UK.

Okay, it's probably urban myth, but I did hear this story once in Paphos:

By Government Law. if the temperature at PFO rises above 35ºc, then all civil servants, shop and office staff can pack up and go home. Hence why temperatures @ PFO never seem to reach that level, despite Max's contradictory evidence that yesterday lunchtime, less than 1km away from PFO on Timi Beach, it was a simmering 36ºc+ !!

I believe this is what really controls 'official' PFO temperatures for the general populace. Maybe pilots taking off are given real-time true data from the control tower?

Well it's been a smashing day here near LTN with 23ºc today, no cloud, a gentle breeze, and 16ºc overnight. Tomorrow, August Bank Holiday here, even better! Max 25ºc - so I bet the BBQs will be out! Unususual, as it's normally lashing down on our bank holiday weekends!

Remember that we usually get an Indian Summer in September too, around the time of the Autumnal Equinox (12 hours day, 12 night wherever you are on Earth) on September 22nd...

Cheers- AL :)

I believe that should the temperature reach 35C then people working outdoors should find shade and lighter duties, something along those lines. There's nothing about packing up and going home I don't think!

Personally never noticed it cool down this August or being cooler in any way, I have never known such a hot summer in my time here, Cy summers are always hot and humid but this year season seems to have been well over the top, talking to a local Cypriot farmer near to us he said all is huge tomato crop was ruined by lack of rain all his crop has been thrown away, he said the same a very hot dry summer, it has been one of the warmest summers he could remember, I agreed with him, also no sign of any change, we really do need some of the wet stuff.

I'm sure Paphos Airport uses a compliant weather station to collect met data. Surface temperature has a direct and important impact on an aircraft's take-off speed and performance, therefore airports cannot afford to selectively fiddle the figures to suit the tourists industry. See: https://aviation.stackexchange.com/ques ... erformance
I wonder HiC why you do have to question any posts from me? Was YOU there at Timi beach near the runway of the airport last Saturday 2pm? Obviously not. I go always with reality not guessing. As I posted, the temperature was 36.5C there at the time and driving back home on the airport road went up even to 37C. I don't know which figures the Paphos Airport gives to the pilots, but I know that the ONLY measuring station for Paphos ( and all Internet sites take that) is there in the middle of the runway. However on all weather web sites 32C were reported.
That Paphos weather station reports lower figures than it is in reality is not new, but goes back more than 30 years and I heard it many times from locals which always had a laugh about it.
As you mentioned that you live 12 years here it looks to me that you know it all. :roll: More than 10 years back when Cyprus had zero unemployment figures and temperatures were higher than 35C you would not find people working outdoors in full sunshine. Maybe nowadays people are too worried to lose their job.
Different topic (slightly) but I was waiting for month now to answer your rather rude comments:

In my opinion we had our Winter rain already and it is looking that there is not too much more to come....Max

"How on earth can you claim that? If weather forecasters struggle to see more than a week ahead, how come you can claim to know what's coming in February, March and April? Powerful binoculars?" :shock:

If you live a bit longer than 12 years on this Island than you realize that the Weather in Cyprus repeats itself every 4-5 years or so.
After my above post from Jan 21th we had the following rainfall in my area near the for Paphos most important dam:

27.1. 17 = 3 mm (snow)
Feb. 17 = 3 mm
2.3.17 = 6 mm
12.3.17 = 27 mm
April 17 = 11 mm
20.5.17 = 8 mm total since 21.1.17 = 58 mm
Is up to you if you think this was a lot of rain - it wasn't! You can visit the Asprokremnos Dam and have a look yourself.

I used to work for a company in West Byfleet. At one point they hired a programmer from India, who flew over especially for the contract. He had to work in his own office, because he needed the heating turned up full, IN HIGH SUMMER!

He would site there, fully suited and booted, working away, and if you had to pop in to give him some instructions, you would melt. God knows how hot it would have to get before he took his jacket off. The human body has a remarkable ability to adapt. Already, we are finding our swimming pool a bit chillier, whereas last year we were still sploshing about in November (albeit with gritted teeth).

Over the 17+ years that I have lived in Cyprus I have seen that 40c is the temperature that Nicosia health authorities consider that all outdoor works and the workers should stop work!
When temps reach that it is noticeable that building sites become deserted. There is also a marked decrease in all construction related traffic on the roads!

Perhaps this contributes to the general Cypriot population taking their holidays in August while the children are away from school.

You can forgive me for loving conspiracy theories, but I've just been looking at the Weather Matrix here on PL for this afternoon 3pm / 4pm...

Paphos Airport: 27ºc
Pano Platres (1,050m ASL): 27ºc

No way is this possible, surely?

It's 32 in the shade here in Polemi, if that helps.

I've often found the Pano Platres reading a bit weird, to be frank. It seems to change by about 8 degrees very suddenly, on occasion.

So there you go, more confirmation of possible 'skewed' temperature readings?

PFO: 27ºc
Polemi (460m asl): 32ºc

As they (apparantley) continuously say in 'Eastenders'- Wossgoingon?

I concur with Max's findings at Timi Beach on Saturday last, and would guesstimate the real PFO temperature this afternoon to be more like 33ºc if not more...

Not disputing what you are saying, Lloyd, but WU on PL Weather Matrix deffo stated 27ºc @ PFO between 1300 and 1500 EET today, m8!

I don't think pilots go by 'feels like' estimates on take-off, do you? They want actual readings, same as F1 teams, like in Belgium yesterday! Still a mystery to be solved, methinks!
