Mouldy damp patches

Just had an email from Homeserve that contains what might be a very useful tip for some of you good peeps in Cyprus!

Ditch the damp
Pour 1 pint of water into an empty paint tin, add half as much PVA glue and mix together. Paint the solution over and around the damp patches once or twice a week, until the mould disappears.

Got to be worth a try, if you're suffering from mould and damp patches inside your property...

Worth a try I am feed up each spring coming back to our villa and clear a wall that just keeps lifting the emulation off.

What is your typical pre-Spring shutdown period for your villa, typically, may I politely enquire? And whereabouts (roughly) is it located please?

Another useful Homeserve hot tip, concerning the wonderful cleaning abilities of that bottle of humble Tomato Ketchup in your fridge, amazing!

My tip: Paphos is a very hard water area. Fed up with limescale stains in and on your stainless steel sink and draining board? Dry them thoroughly with kitchen tissue. Spray lightly with WD40 and leave to soak for an hour. Wipe thoroughly with kitchen tissue.

Apparently, it's the fish oil in WD40 that creates this miraculous (and quite long-lasting) water displacement effect, for up to two months. Try it!

But Lloyd, my WD40 suggestion is based on our own experience here in hard water Luton. It works great for us on our stainless steel sink and drainer, so how can it be myth and legend, m8?

It also works well on chrome taps, shower mixers and heads, by the way...

I'm sure I read somewhere that fish oil is one of the secret ingredients of the 40th version of WD (hence WD40) that made it the success that it is. But as it's a secret blend, and was never patented, who can say for sure?

One thing is for sure, though. You can buy WD40 locally in Paphos, so why not give it a try? Works wonders on squeaky door hinges, too!

I was using WD40 on my first motorbike, a 200cc James Captain, aged 16, Lloyd. 70 next week, jeez... So probably been using it slightly longer than you, LOL!

100% sure that I read somewhere on the net that the breakthrough on WD blend 40 was the addition of fish oil, despite the manufacture's (and your) claims that it doesn't. After all, if their recipe is an unpatented secret blend, then mis-information and fibs surely come into play? I'll investigate further and report back.

This all smells fishy to me...

It would seem Ideal for Cyprus, especially houses that are unoccupied for periods. The original design was only for houses with lofts, this newer unit works on houses without lofts so would seem ideal. I think you can also get a unit that works of a solar panel called solarventi, but is much more expensive, and of course will only work during the day, and if there is sunlight.

For the good people here on PL who leave their properties locked down and shut up for long periods, then return to find that horrible mould and musty smell issue, the suggestion by robf above is well worth looking into.

Alternatively, if you don't have a trustworthy neighbour who will open front and rear doors for an hour or two each week, in order to air the place, then I've thought of another possible solution...

All internal doors left wide open. A Dehumidifier unit powered from a smart Timer plug, that kicks in nightly at (say) 21:00 for an hour, or perhaps weekly for a couple of hours?

From an external security point of view, it's well worth considering LED Dawn to Dusk lamps, front and rear. These cost peanuts to run leccy wise, but do alert low-life that someone is at home. You can also leave a low wattage LED table lamp running 24/7 (or on a daily timer plug) inside the property, to further deter potential burglars...

Thoughts please?
