Jetty for large cruise ships under consideration in Paphos

Post by memory man »

Technoeconomic studies are being carried out to determine the economic and technical viability of the projects, Paphos CCI President Andreas Demetriades told CNA.

If the projects are deemed non-viable, a series of incentives will be given to the private sector, including shops, restaurants and other facilities and amenities on the jetty.

Replying to questions, Demetriades said the aim is to facilitate large cruise ships to dock, and to create a passage for tourists to walk straight into the harbour without having to use boats or other vessels, as they do today.

Demetriades noted that the studies being carried out provide for a thorough evaluation of the international cruise ship market, especially the market in the Mediterranean.

He added that measures must be taken to safeguard the upgrading of the services and the functionality of the harbour, and to improve the ease of movement of visitors in the harbour.

Demetriades pointed out that Paphos, due to its geographical location and natural beauty, is high on the priority list of cruise organisers.

He furthermore said that the project is decisive in efforts to boost the local economy.

I thought the antiquities on the sea bed would prevent this being constructed..

I agree & I think the mayor recognises this which is part of the reason that so much work has been done on the town. After all, the residential yacht MS The World visited the other year & those who reside on it get to choose where they visit!

It is my view that a lot of older people do not disembark if they have to use a tender.

What do you define as "older people", my father-in-law is 80 & would have no trouble .............. or do you mean people who are not quite so able irrespective of age?

When I was on the Eclipse last September many older and disabled passengers used the tender at Villafranche. Some people cruise many times a year and just choose not to get off at certain ports.
