I've always felt that the 'package' of internet and telephone line are a rip off - especially as the landline is acually using the internet connection to make the calls. The wife and I each have a mobile phone and friends/family would always call us on our mobiles, so we simply didn't need a landline.

In the UK I was with Virgin and the 'package' included a landline which we didn't want. The only phone calls we ever had on the landline were cold calling sellers - probably having been sold all Virgin numbers by Virgin themselves. Even though I had registered with the Telephone Preference Service (TPS) to prevent spam calls, they never stopped.

Although I was happy that in Cyprus, Cyta allows 'naked lines', they are certainly overpriced. I cannot understand why they advertise the 10Mb internet you have as €34.51 (before telephony) and yet charge me €46.77 for the exactly same speed (without telephony).

The mind boggles.

Unfortunately, you still have the line rental bit, "naked dsl" or landline -all us providers have to pay cyta for the local loop access, which is the line rental bit. I think from memory it is €10.20+VAT per month. it is reduced to €5+VAT per month if you supply your own DSL equipment in the exchange, but there is a "rack space" rental to pay, plus charges if you need to visit the exchange to check your equipment, so probably not worth providing your own dslam.

There are proposals to limit the "local loop" charge to other providers from the telecoms regulator, so this may come down in time.

ps: @Holitec: Similar proposals from Ofcom here in UK, where telephone line rentals have been rising every 9 months, way ahead of inflation. It now stands at around £20 pcm, for an old copper wire system that is hardly being maintained and upgraded regularly... All driven by BT, and then the rest follow on like a bunch of sheep...

I'm not sure how Cyta could block VOIP services being used, but in any case, they don't.

Many people here use Skype or Factime to keep in touch. My mother doesn't have wi-fi nor a computer, so I use my mobile to ring her landline. These calls are surprisingly very cheap.

100% certain that voip services are not blocked - the only services blocked are those required by law, like gambling and nasty porn sites.

Looks like Cyta are behind schedule for speed increases.

Ping 25 is a bit worrying. Shows that most of the traffic is going to Nicosia via ancient copper wire infrastructure, rather than modern optical fibre super fast highways...

Which probably explains why download (and in particular) upload speeds are so naff. For a lot less per month, I'm getting a reliable fibre broadband service from Virgin of 200Mbps download and 12 Mbps upload, with no caps, no limits. £20 pcm. (Okay, line rental on top)

I keep reading of CYTA broadband speeds and prices and thinking, Jeez, what a rip-off. They are clearly NOT investing in the future, by implanting a proper fibre optic network across the island, at the same time all the other utilities are digging the roads up, are they?

There is no comparison between the UK and here - all traffic from here must go via expensive undersea fibres! There is a world of difference between dragging a fibre between London and Manchester, or even London and Paris, to dragging a fibre between Paphos and Rome, or Athens, or Egypt! - ok, a fibre between UK and US may be expensive, but look at the traffic volumes in comparison between Paphos and say Athens.

My contracts are with the Undersea fibres, and the bandwidth costs are about 8x the equivalent costs in the UK, plus here there are no limits - I noticed an advert for sky fibre on the TV, and there was a 25GB per month limit in the small print, 24 HOURS USAGE for many of my clients, look at the fair usage policies in the small print before you say it is a rip off here.
