Cyta speed test

Post by Mark »

For 4 days now, my 16mb speed that I pay for is showing on speed tests at 17mb.

Looks like Cyta are gearing up to increase speeds from September 1st.

In my case to 20mb, at a lower cost than I currently pay.

Can I be really nosey Mark, and ask what you're currently paying CYTA for your existing 16Mbs broadband service please?

Then, what you expect to be paying pcm for your new 20Mbs service next month? Whereabouts are you located, out of interest?

Cheers- AL :?

Thanks, Mark! 20Mbs is probably good enough for you. What's your current upload speed and ping like, on your speed tests?

Ping 30

Upload .75. .8 from Sept 1st.

I could opt to pay 38.43 per month for 30mb download and 1mb upload, not sure if it's worth doing.

Mark,

I'm with Cyta and have a 'naked line' (ie no telephone line). For a 10Mps internet connection I pay €46.77 per month and (unfortunately) will not get a free upgrade on 1 Sep.

I am assuming that your stated cost of €45.22 does not include your telephone line which takes the cost you pay to €61.80 per month?

Also, can you please tell me where you found the cost you expect to pay after 1 Sep? A link would be good, if you have one.

Thanks.

Ps Royal, can't believe they won't upgrade your speed, seems like bad business practice.

I thought the speed upgrade was going to happen in August, as we had our new contract in May (we get the new terms slightly before cyta customers)

Permanent fibre wireless customers get 10MB/2MB upload for €25.50, however our fixed line dsl customers only get 8MB/.75kbps for that price, as cyta takes a cut on the line supply part.

Royal, the speed upgrade should be automatic, however if you log in to your modem you can see the negotiated rates 192.168.10.254 - that should show the current maximum rate you can get - VDSL2 does fall off quicker then ADSL. Do you have the latest white modem? the older ones are ADSL, the new ones support VDSL2+ - or in the UK BT call it superfast fibre! In fact the latest model supports bonding, so you can join 2 VDSL connections together to get double the speed, not tried one out yet but have installed one on a single line.

Digby, many thanks, but I think you are crediting me with more knowledge than I have about these things!

Cyta had an automatic upgrade not so long ago where most customers got a 2x increase (ie 2Mbps to 4Mbps, 4Mbps to 8 Mbps etc). However, as I had a 6Mbps speed, I was only upgraded to 10Mbps - better than nothing, but not actually doubled. The latest planned upgrades seem to leave those, like me, on 10Mbps to remain on 10Mbps.

My modem was replaced within the last 12 months and is a white ZX DSL 931 DB Cyta branded model.

Do you actually need all these high speeds. We are just about managing most of the time of a reading of around 6mbps. 20 and 30 mbps would seem amazing to us..
Why do you need such high speeds.

Edit. I have just done a speed test and I am getting 5.3 with a mag box on and this laptop..

You started something here did you not, Mark? All good stuff, if alerts members that CYTA are still 'conveniently' ripping off existing customers with slow speeds and high prices (like Virgin do here in UK) unless you phone in, complain, and politely threaten to move ISP...

Let's keep this thread running, YES? AL ;)

What I am unsure of Al, following Trevs comment, is whether it is worth upgrading to 30mb?

As I understand it, Mark, 8Mbs is fine for streaming catchup tv, skype, voip and suchlike. 20Mbs certainly won't harm you, particularly if it works out cheaper than your present 16Mbs service..

Higher speeds are preferred by peeps who like to download then burn a complete 4gb movie DVD, perhaps? Digby can perhaps advise further, as he really knows his stuff!

Another question: What would CYTA be charging you for broadband WITHOUT their landline? Where you were just relying on a SoEasy PAYG mobile, and VOIP / Skype at home?

Hi Al, I stream wirelessly as my router is on the other side of the room. I do not use Skype, but use FaceTime. You are perceptive, I have Cyta Pay as you go!

The reason I was thinking about an upgrade, was to stop buffering (which is occasional) and to watch HD channels, which can be spasmodic

Not sure what Cyta would charge without a landline as I use and feel I need a landline.

This morning (Wed) I get lower than I pay for, why? not sure but this is from their web page. We pay for 10 MB so no upgrade as yet, not even what we pay for. Have to say normally I get speed wise all I ever need including streaming TV. We are mostly hard wired connected to our Cyta router.

Looks like no change or upgrade for 10MB service so you would need to pay for any upgrades over and above 10MB (looking at the list posted above)

With the phone and the internet, the charge is €51.09cents per month.

If the general increase in speeds has yet to come, maybe we will see some improvement in September..

To help with understanding the speeds required the following may give a guideline:

SD stream - 1MB-4MB
HD stream - 4MB-10MB
UHD Stream - could use up to 30MB - edited after some tests!

For most use 6MB is fine, except for HD/UHD streams, and probably not too much other use at the same time as viewing. The MAX rate is usually only for a split second during high frame changes.

The reason the bandwidth varies is due to the amount of changes between frames, so for a slower changing scene (like say sky news, BBC1 etc) the bandwidth will be lower on average, high speed action like sports the bandwidth will be higher due to the higher number of frames. Most transcoders work by taking a still frame, transmitting it, then the following frames only contain the changes, until the transcoder sends another full picture, so the lower number of changes to the original frame, the less bandwidth needed.

Most providers specify 2MB as the minimum, but I would think you would struggle on less than 6MB

HTH
