Wine festival turns 56

Limassol has earned the reputation as the ‘wine capital of Cyprus’, mainly due to the Wine Festival, which takes place every year at the Limassol Municipal Gardens.

This year it will be staged for the 56th time between August 31 and September 10.
Since 1961 – the birth of the festival, it has become an established annual event of merrymaking and fun for the whole family.

Citizens of Limassol are not the only participants; visitors from all over Cyprus, as well as from overseas, attend the event.

So if you find yourself in Limassol during this ‘dewine’ event, you’d be mad to miss it!
Wine, food and entertainment

Visitors will have the chance to sample various types of Cypriot wines, some of which are regarded the best in Europe.

Besides a packed entertainment programme including traditional music and dancing, there will be a selection of tasty Cypriot food and delicacies available for purchase. Think traditional favourites like tzatziki, halloumi and hummus.

Photographic competition

Meanwhile, Cyprus Photographic Society (CPS) Limassol, in close co-operation with the Limassol Municipality, will present the ‘Wine Festival 2016’ winning photography throughout the duration of this year’s event.

A selection of 70 photos will be on display. These have been selected by an independent four-member jury from the entries submitted in the ‘Wine Festival 2016’ Pancyprian competition.

Contestants were requested to depict the prevailing festival’s atmosphere, events, scenes and people.

The 2016 winners are: first prize Marios Ioannides with the photo titled: ‘Kopiaste’; second prize Thanasis Hadjipavlou with the photo titled: ‘Smile’ and third prize Erato Kantouna with the photo titled: ‘Leventia’.

“Remember to bring your cameras, as the photographic competition is staged every year,” says CPS Limassol branch President, Marios Ioannides.
