Rat infestation in next doors garden

Post by Sandra »

We own a house in lower Peyia and the house next door to us is empty, we seem to thinks it's been repossessed. In the garden is two huge trees plus a lemon tree against our pump house which it appears that the rats are living in the trees and coming over into our garden via the lemon tree. Unfortunately we do not live there so they are making themselves at home by going into the pump house entering underneath the door which we are in the process of having it made more secure, they are chewing through everything destroying the pool net the hose pipe etc. The plot is in a mess over run with weeds and shrubs, trees are just monstrous. The pool is destroyed due to not been looked after for two years.

The reason why I have posted it on here is for help in what to do, we have had Panic put rat poison down and called in at Peyia Municipality late last year but they do not want to know. This situation is now ruining our holidays and how far do they go in destroying the property. I have tried all this week to speak to the Municipality but to know avail, nobody answers the phone!! Does anyone have a name and contact number of anyone in the Municipality or should we contact the Mayor and if so does anyone have a name and number for him.

We cannot find it up for sale does anyone know how to find if its to be auctioned off?

Many thanks in advance for your help.

Not sure if the above helps , but is the latest info that I could find.
I would also suggest contacting the main banks ( BOC and Alpha ) to see if they can help.
Good luck.

Peyia Municipality is very easy to find. They have a Facebook Page, they also have a website.

Peyia Municipality's FB Page is: https://www.facebook.com/peyia.municipality?fref=ts
Their website address is: http://www.pegeiamunicipality.com/
Their phone number is: 26-621113

Why not contact one of the council members Linda Leblanc? She is English Canadian speaking and can be reached by email at: [email protected] or by phone at 26 621272.

The name of the Mayor is Marinos Lambrou and he can be reached at 99-596007

If the house next door is empty then just go into that garden with the pest control people. Surely nobody is going to object.

We had rats in our wood shed. They were doing a similar thing. They were using the tree next door that overhung our property to travel between the two houses. The house next door has a dog and the food was out 24/7 They were eating it.. He bought some little squares that you nail to the trees and our of harms way for domestic pets, but the rats love it. It kills them. It worked. Next time you come out, buy a few of these or ask someone you know to do it for you if its urgent. They are only a few euro, in home market.

Rats chewed our bouganvilla last winter and the bark of our lemon trees. Phillipos in the DIY section has rat poison in blocks that do the trick. Found one extremely large rat dead one morning. Roger

Should have said we have the same problem as you Sandra in fact reading your story it sounds just like our neighbours house which has been empty 8 years now. It belongs to the Bank of Cyprus who it seems have forgotten they own it. Idiots.

Just what I was thinking. And if anybody does object then you have found the owners!

You do realise that with cruel and inhumane posts like that, you'll shortly be on the receiving end of flack from the Cyprus branch of "The Rats Protection League"
Lloyd, throw some left-overs out into your garden before retiring. Train a night video cam recorder on that food area, then study the nocturnal video footage next day. I bet you'll be amazed by who visits your garden through the night...

Cheers- AL ;)

Thank you to all of you for your help. We have tried several numbers at the Peyia Muncipality and sent emails but to no avail. It seems a waste of time trying to get any help from them, as nobody takes it on board as how serious this is. Our next action will be to get the mayor involved and to contact Linda.

The Palm trees where the vermin have taken up home are extremely big and lots of dead hanging leaves due to the location of the trees they are now obstructing the sun. It makes us very angry as its as though we have to put up with it, we have had a tree surgeon round and he is willing to lop them at our expense of course. What would happen to us if we have the trees chopped, and as someone said at least we would know who the owners are 👍

Our daughter and her family are over for two weeks and are now making visits to Phillipos for the poison which hopefully reduces the numbers and far better that they love the poison and all have a last supper before dying...

We will also use the link to try and find out who it belongs to (bank), not sure whether they would be interested in helping though.

Our friends' Honda when parked in the Akamas area used to have its wiring eaten every few months by lovely rats.
