Turtles hatching at Lara beach outside Paphos (PICTURES)

Post by memory man »

Stunning photographs have been caught by the lens of Phileleftheros photojournalist Yiannis Nisiotis on a day trip to Lara beach near Akamas in the Paphos district.

A dedicated turtle conservation and reproduction team oversaw turtle hatchlings make their way into the waves.

The eggs of the Loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta-caretta) hatch approximately seven weeks after they are laid in the sand.

We have fond memories of being on Lara Beach one day when the turtle team were excavating the hatchlings, putting them in a cool box or bucket and then taking them nearer the sea. They wanted loads of beachgoers to stand around in a funnel-shape to encourage the hatchlings towards the sea. By doing this during the daytime, fewer hatchlings are lost to predators than if left to scrabble out of the nest and down towards the sea themselves.
