The traffic lights are for entertainment only to most Cypriot drivers ( yes I know some ex pats are the same). :D
Very easy to mock, but the police booked a large number of speeding people the other week. its seems they cant win, alot of people moan that nothing gets done, when they do something about it you still moan

Rubbish! If the police were serious then they would enforce the law every week not just one week in a blue moon! Oh, and advertise a campaign in advance .................... what a joke!

That old chestnut again. It makes sense to me why they would do that, as it will save more lives during the duration of the campaign.

And then what happens when the campaign finishes? So for one week of the year the death rate goes down ............ what about the other 51 weeks or don't they matter?

Of course they matter. You can't have an increased campaign every week of the year though, otherwise it wouldn't be an increased campaign.

Besides, you are more likely to catch the worst offenders if you announce the campaign beforehand. They will be the ones too stupid to modify their behaviour for the duration of the week.

It's very easy to knock the Cypriot police. People that do seem to believe the police are not doing their job unless they are at the end of their road in high viz jackets.
Those of you who read the local press (not many I know), may have seen an recent article regarding Limassol. It seems this is the town with half the country's road deaths, and therefore warrants particular attention.
They carried out checks on major roads and accident black spots, and nabbed 336 people in 8 hours!!!

The breakdown is as follows:
81 for Illegal parking
78 driving without a seatbelt
25 using a mobile whilst driving
12 driving a motorbike without a licence (8 motorbikes and 4 mopeds were seized)
2 for being in possession of a stolen vehicle
198 for other offences

Similar action will be taken in other districts.

I think we should be praising the police, not knocking them.

Sorry Dominic but you are talking out the back end of an old chestnut! You make it sound like an increased campaign for a week or so is a virtue ......surely the police should be doing their job every week! And your last statement is crass quite honestly ............ so the ones that are clever enough to modify their behaviour for a week & then go back to normal are acceptable! Beggars belief

Yes but that highlights the magnitude of the problem ............. think what the police could do in 8 week or 8 months for that matter! Maybe it would make the road users think more about their actions & how they interact with other road users, & not just those that they need to do for a short campaign!

You're wrong on this Shane, just like you are on Brexit ;)

2012 1,492 Total Accidents
2013 1,273 Total Accidents
2014 1,154 Total Accidents
2015 958 Total Accidents
2016 942 Total Accidents

From: http://www.police.gov.cy/police/police. ... enDocument

No, as usual you don't understand the figures (like Brexit but nothing new there ;) )!

Without going into a breakdown of the accident figures, I would hope that they would decrease over time & would expect them to do so but the decrease would most likely be bigger if the police were carrying out regular campaigns & not just a few ad hoc ones. For example, spend a couple of hours on the TOTK road in the evening & watch the T***s riding their motor bikes up & down! Barry Sheen has nothing on these guys!

Quite the charmer aren't you? If it's any consolation, I think you are talking a load of twaddle too, so at least we have a common ground.

Oh & by the way, tell that to the families of the deceased that were killed outside the police's "increased campaign"! Bet that really helps!

I will but I don't think you will ...... so you accept that drivers who modify their behaviour to comply with a police campaign & then revert back to normal is acceptable because .................................................. !

Fill in the blanks please

That isn't what I said at all. Show me where I said that was acceptable? It is never acceptable.

I am talking about basic crisis management. Given a limited number of resources, you have to utilise them to their best potential, and that means targeting the most dangerous offenders. The best way to do that is to tell everybody you are going to be on the look out and arresting those dumb enough to still carry on.

Now, you could argue that by doing surprise tests you will more quickly train the general population into not using their phones. Perhaps you will, perhaps you won't. I don't know. But given that governments tend to alert people beforehand, (look at speed cameras in the UK, for instance), the suggestion would be that their research indicates that is better to tell people.
