Greek Extremists
Re: Greek Extremists
I think "The North", or "Northern Cyprus" is fine, personally, because it is Geographically accurate. I am against calling it TRNC though, just as I am against calling Cyprus a Greek Island.

Re: Greek Extremists
I can understand why you are against calling Cyprus a Greek Island, because it isn't.
But TRNC (Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus) should be OK because:
1. That is its official name.
2. It is Turkish.
3. It is a Republic (recognized or not).
4. It is Northern Cyprus (a name you say is "fine".

Re: Greek Extremists
It isn't Turkish, and it is an unrecognised republic. If I walk into your house and say this is mine, it doesn't make it my house.

Maybe you should just respect the wishes of the Cypriot people of Paphos?

Re: Greek Extremists
Many posters on here, including myself, visit the north, as we call it. We wouldn't for a minute say "We're just going over to the occupied area for a long weekend". That sounds ridiculous.
Re: Greek Extremists
Do you speak for all the people of Paphos?
Look, I am sorry if we disagree on this issue - but hey, that's life. People don't often all agree on anything.
Geoff.
Re: Greek Extremists
No of course I don't. But of all the Cypriots I have spoken to in the whole of Cyprus, NOT ONE of them have referred to it as TRNC.
Most of them that I talk to, if the talk about it at all, refer to the North, simple as that.
Cyprus Mail, and In Cyprus, both refer to The North.

Probably not, nor have I.Dominic wrote: ↑Fri Jul 28, 2017 9:57 amNo of course I don't. But of all the Cypriots I have spoken to in the whole of Cyprus, NOT ONE of them have referred to it as TRNC.

But if YOU mention the TRNC the Greek Cypriot knows where you are talking about.
Geoff.
Re: Greek Extremists
So what if they know what you are talking about? They will still think you are being very rude. If I addressed somebody as "grumpy old bigoted fart" they would know I was talking to them, but they wouldn't like it.geoffreys wrote: ↑Fri Jul 28, 2017 10:10 amProbably not, nor have I.Dominic wrote: ↑Fri Jul 28, 2017 9:57 amNo of course I don't. Re: Greek Extremists
Well if that is how they feel they have never said so to my face, maybe just being polite.Dominic wrote: ↑Fri Jul 28, 2017 10:28 amSo what if they know what you are talking about? Re: Greek Extremists
Exactly, and by saying "The North" instead of "TRNC" you are being equally polite.

Re: Greek Extremists
Good point. Well I would be if I did, which I don't. This is getting a bit 'PC' - not a Cypriot thing PC.

Geoff.
P.S. we could do with a bigger selection of emogees. Like one that says "am I bothered" (from the TV series).
Re: Greek Extremists
Geoffrey, you come on here for the argument, as this obviously appeals to you - yet it's a Paphos forum, you are based in Varosha.....?

It is not PC at all. Just good manners.
