We keep on reading about these, what I would like to know is where do the perpetrators buy the poison from? Aren't such products banned from retail?
To say that Cypriots are cruel to animals would be a massive under-statement! And when caught the Courts just hand down minimal sentences and/or fines.

Lanate may be banned but , of course, there are Rat Poisons readily available and if temptingly presented a dog or cat will eat it.

I have never joined Facebook and try to avoid using it.
I prefer exchange of info between members of the forum on the forum.
Anyway, many thanks for that link.
Anyway, I don't understand why the locals just don't shoot animals if they dislike them so much, rather than making them suffer a nasty death with poison (lanate or whatever). They shoot at everything else!

Geoff, it's quite unfair to tar all Cypriots with the same brush. Everyday there are news stories from the UK and other countries which show that animal cruelty is not limited to any one country. I know of many Cypriots who adore their pets. Animal poisoning has been in Cyprus for many years and despite best endeavours by many will not be driven out overnight.

Not at all, most Cypriots are fine with animals/pets.
But the people caught, when they are, for poisoning animals - or mistreating them - seem to be always Cypriots.
I haven't read of any non-Cypriots doing it.
WHL, I love Cyprus otherwise wouldn't live here. But no country is perfect and there is nothing wrong in highlighting any shortcomings such as this one.

Have been biting my tongue all day on this contentious subject, folks.

Since a lot of these events seem to happen close to restaurants, I'm beginning to wonder if it's just plain ignorance when it comes to dealing with local rat infestations, by them simply not laying the rat poison properly?

So collateral damage occurs when local free-ranging dogs and cats visit, surely? Rat poison should be in a proper plastic box that only a rat (or mouse) can enter and exit! NOT a dog or a cat, etc...

You cannot just go spreading rat poison wantonly around your premises, FCS!

This has been implemented in the last few years in the Tala area - foot-long blue plastic tubes. Hope it is effective and no pets are tempted.

Agreed. I live in a little village on the South Downs. We have dog poisoning alerts here quite frequently. Same when we lived in East Sussex. Cruelty to animals in the UK can be utterly, utterly monstrous. I also know Cypriots who are completely devoted to their animals, and others who work for animal welfare.

The facts are that in Cyprus cruelty to animals tends to be by Cypriots. That is not to say that all Cypriots are cruel to animals, they are not.
However it IS a problem and should be highlighted and condemned whenever we hear about it.
Some Brits living in East Sussex, England, may be similar apparently - I wouldn't know not having resided in that County.

When in England the practice where we lived when laying rat or mouse bait was to put it on the ground , out of the way and covered by a heavy semi circular piece of drain pipe. The diameter of the pipe being too small and also too heavy to allow dogs or cats to move the pipe, but just deep enough to allow rodents to access it.
You could use one of the local red terracotta roof tiles if you have them.

That's exactly how Luton Council went about dealing with our recent rat problem, Dee, for FREE as well, with three regular revisits to check their expert work was 100% successful. When they knew it was, they removed all the poison traps and boxes off site.

He also said that if the rat problem reappears, just report it online, and we'll be straight out to deal with it. Saved me buying a .22 Air Rifle with Telescopic Sight, LOL!

Having worked in an animal rescue here I can certainly say there is an awful lot of cruelty to animals by Cypriots. I have 2 rescue dogs & their stories would break your heart. I agree that the U.K. also has problems but there are laws which help to protect the animals & punish the abusers. Here it is not treated as serious & the animals are dispensable. Animal Party Cyprus is trying to make a difference but it has a long way to go.
