With an average of 79%, Cyprus is ranked fourth in social media use in the European Union while 96% of 16-24 year-olds in Cyprus are active social media users.
A recent EU study found that the European average of social media use was around 63% with Hungary (83%), Malta (82%), Belgium (80%) and Cyprus (79%) taking the top four places.
Nearly nine out of ten 16-24-year-old in the EU use social media platforms with Cyprus at 96%, just one mark off top spot which is shared by Belgium, Denmark and Hungary at 97%.
In the 65-74-year-old category, Cyprus surpasses the EU average of 32% with 45% of its senior citizens being avid social media users behind Belgium (56%), Hungary (55%), Malta (51%) and Portugal (50%).
Age is also an important factor which determines the use of the internet.
Popular choices for users in the 16-24 age group in 2016 included social media network participation (88%), watching videos on YouTube or Netflix (83%) and listening to music (80%).
The most popular activities for users in the 65-74 age group included reading the news (64%) and reading on health related matters (59%).
In Cyprus, the most popular activity at 72% and well over the 39% EU average was making video calls and watching videos.
Cyprus found itself below average (46%) in listening to music and the third lowest with regards to internet banking while Cypriots at 70% are just a breath away from scraping the barrel with regards to reading e-mails.

It's certainly true that Cypriots seem to have a fear of email.
If it social media you are after, don't forget Paphos Life's very own Facebook page.

We are also on Twitter, but to be frank I find that more annoying than anything.

I wouldn't be seen dead using any of those social media - especially not Facebook.Dominic wrote: ↑Wed Jul 19, 2017 2:49 pm It's certainly true that Cypriots seem to have a fear of email.

An awful lot Geoffrey for millions of people including myself, who is logged on from 6am until 11pm
It is almost like live chat, it is so quick. And you can post photographs directly and instantaneously from your computer, not an outside source..

I love Facebook. But it is like anything, you get out of it what you put in.
The funniest criticism I see about facebook is people moaning about the crap that appears on their timelines from friends they don't even really know.
Well, the answer is simple: don't have 400 odd friends. Just have the few people you really care about as friends. Then your timeline becomes interesting.
What facebook doesn't do well is forums. However, it's sheer convenience means that a lot of people use it for group chat etc. One thing I aim to do in future is make it so you can associate a facebook account with your Paphos Life account. Nobody else would notice the difference, but it would mean that if you were logged into facebook, you wouldn't need to log in to Paphos Life as well to post. It would be more convenient for the facebook users amongst us, without impinging on the non facebook users.

Facebook is something many subscribe to, because its where they learn and view the lives of those close to them.... You don't need to contribute...
Some call it Fudbook.....
Personally, I wish social media had never been invented and I'll celebrate if someone releases a competitor that sends them to their demise.... I don't think they've necessarily improved lives.... however, my view is narrow and personal.
Twitter has it's uses, such as instantaneous news.... albeit full of garbage as well.

Do you think President Trump would use any such competitor, rather than Twitter?
