EasyJet getting ready to move headquarters to Vienna - post Brexit

Post by PhotoLady »

British budget airline easyJet said on Friday it would establish a new airline in Austria to protect its flying rights in the European Union once Britain leaves the bloc.
The new airline, easyJet Europe, will be headquartered in Vienna. The budget airline must have a licence and an air operator’s certificate (AOC) in an EU member to allow it to continue flying between and within EU countries after Brexit.
The new airline licence in Austria will protect these flights regardless of what happens in negotiations over the status of flights between Britain and the EU after Britain leaves the bloc in March 2019.
“The accreditation process is now well advanced and easyJet hopes to receive the AOC and licence in the near future,” easyJet said in a statement.

Well that is certainly not our experience in flying with them.. Good flights good food and a fair amount of leg room.

Return prices at Easter were 77 UK pounds each.

Typical! If you had read the article, you would see that EasyJet has no intention of transferring everything to Austria, only sufficient to enable it to maintain its intra-European business.

Used EasyJet on every trip we took from Cyprus back to UK (Liverpool). Always happy with the service, only 1 delay we had was coming back to Cyprus on our first trip but that was because UKs air-traffic control system went down for a couple of hours rather than any fault of EasyJet.

Great prices, food is okay and the staff have always been very polite and friendly. Only drawback - no in-flight entertainment but I stick a couple of TV episodes on my phone and some music along with my Kindle and that's me sorted. We're planning on destinations with shorter durations now we're based back in UK so lack of entertainment will be a doddle.

Come Brexit, at least EasyJet look set to be around to still fly from UK which (apparently) is more definite than Ryanair are indicating.
“By September 2018 when your average British voter is sitting down to work out where he is going on his holidays in 2019, the two options he will have are to drive to Scotland or get a ferry to Ireland,” he told MEPs.
"There’s nobody in the UK government that has a clue how to do a deal."
The outspoken airline boss, who campaigned for Remain, added, “The sensible outcome here is to ignore the plebiscite of 12 months ago, stay in Europe and continue to benefit from Open Skies.”
Mr O’Leary said, “We’ll be taking a lot of aircraft out of the UK in the April of 2019 and reallocating them to European regional airports and they’ll be seeing a lot more growth than they’ll know how to handle.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/07 ... -aviation/
It seems like O'Leary wants someone else to "seal a deal" for him whereas easyJet have taken the decision to meet the Open Skies problem head on themselves and stay in with a fighting chance.

If no deal is sorted by this time next year who is going to want to book flights in advance with Ryanair (or any other airline with their licence only based in UK) for the end of winter 2018/2019 when the chance is with Ryanair you may only be able to fly to and from Dublin rather than anywhere else in UK after Brexit? Summer 2019 could be completely out of the window by then!

We use Easyjet of choice whenever we can. Usually reasonable prices if you book early, modern aircraft, friendly staff, very good legroom. We came over for a few days recently on a very last minute trip and could only fly with Thomas Cook. What a revelation, and not in a good way. Everything seemed really shoddy compared to Easyjet, the loos were dirtier, plane seats were shabby, staff were not as nice - it really did seem "budget" whereas I don't think Easyjet does. And don't get me started on this stupid Thomas Cook idea of only checking in 24 hours before the flight! Never again.....

easyJet's decision is a master stroke! Their main operations base will remain at LTN, with no job cuts. This new Austrian company they've set up (once they get the Licence and AOC) will still allow them to take advantage of the EU 'Open Skies' policy, by being able to fly to and from any country in the EU that they please, rather than only UK to EU and back...

In contrast, that arrogant little git O'Leary (owner of Ryanair based at London Stansted STN) has publicly announced that after brexit, he won't be flying out of UK any more! He's painted himself into a corner, there...

Watch how quickly he copies easyJet and creates Ryanair Europe, based in Dublin, and applies for a Licence and AOC, you wait and see...

Cheers- AL ;)

Flew back and forth with Helios many times from LTN to PFO in A300 with LEATHER seats, loads of legroom, nice meal, free hold luggage, and very friendly crew..

Tis a shame that events for Helios turned out as they did. I still have one of their blue baggage straps hanging on the wall here in my office.

Funniest flight I remember on Helios was when the Captain announced the names of the 6 or 7 female flight attendants (air hostesses / trolley dollies). Every single one of them was named ELINA! The whole cabin burst into laughter, LOL!

Cheers- AL ;)

You've clearly not flown with them. I agree with Trev when he says:

...and I was formerly a fan of British Airways, but no longer. Flew to Brussels and back with Ryanair a week ago. Not a patch on Easyjet; very uncomfortable, plastic-feel, seats to say the least...and no seat pocket in front.
I have flown with EJ, twice.

Come on Geoffrey's

All things considered Easyjet is a pretty good airline; you're letting anything that criticises Brexit cloud your judgement. We've flown them many times since British Gibraltar stopped flying to Cyprus and they are very efficient.
Although we don't see eye to eye on many things I always read what you post as there is some good information to be had but I think you've lost the plot on this one; could be the heat, ;-)

With my UN blue beret on, it seems to me that Geoff took a misread of the easyJet announcement, perhaps?

He might have thought that they were shifting base HQ from UK to EU? Like a lot of banks are threatening to do, including massive job losses here in UK... Nothing of the kind, Geoff! Please read the article in the OP in full (using the link provided), before you go ranting off on a tangent, m8!

You'll see that easyJet are simply covering their arses, no matter how brexit turns out. And it won't be long before that obnoxious twit in Dublin follows suit with Ryanair, just wait and see!

Cheers- AL :)

I think Easyjet are great. Man/Pfo 2/3 times a year, for the last 4 years, think we had an hour delay once.
Was from Pfo so just sat in the outdoor bar with a glass of wine and chilled.
My airline of choice.

If you want to talk bad airlines, did anybody fly Strategic?

We flew out on them a few years ago, and were delayed 6 1/2 hours. On the way back I think the delay was 7 hours.
