Paphos to address illegal TC property use

The recent improvement works around Paphos town centre has uncovered a cesspool of illegalities surrounding the use of Turkish Cypriot commercial properties prompting local authorities to ‘clean up’ the situation.

Paphos Municipality and the Management Service of Turkish Cypriot Properties have moved to ‘tidy’ the situation, which includes planning illegalities, irregularities, sub-letting and poor maintenance of the properties in question.

The move by the authorities aims to end the long-standing dormancy of many properties and the sub-letting of other properties to third parties.

Municipal officials have listed the buildings and their current status including those which are not being used and those which are in danger of collapsing.

The aim is to include the buildings in the on-going improvement works where they can legally contribute to the development of the commercial centre.

The decision to proceed with this coordinated initiative stems largely from the fact that Paphos is this year’s European Capital of Culture but also the need for low rent commercial premises in order to promote entrepreneurship among the unemployed and young married couples.

The Interior Ministry, responsible for the management of Turkish Cypriot properties, has ordered that illegalities and irregularities regarding Turkish Cypriot properties are to be drastically dealt with by the local authorities.
