Was hoping to trigger something along these lines X

And what categories would we want?

Here are a few that spring to mind:

Sunsets
Weather
Insects
Flowers
Countryside
City Life
Village Life

Can you create sub-groups or just main headings?

We can have sub categories. As I will write it myself we can have whatever we want. I just don't want to make it too complicated.

Kah, I remember our pathetic attempts at flying a kite then. I shall have to invest in a better kite (ie one with all it's sticks) before next year's Green Day.

Six months later, and I am looking at this again.

How is this for a list of categories?

Sunsets

Weather

Flowers

Animals
+ General
+ Cyprus Birds
++ General
++ Eagles
++ Robins
++ Hawks
+ Mammals
++ General
++ Goats
++ Sheep
++ Pigs
++ Cats
++ Dogs
+ Reptiles
++ General
++ Lizards
++ Chameleon
++ Snakes
+ Insects

Countryside
+ General
+ Reservoirs
+ Akamas
+ Troodos
+ Paphos Forest
+ Coast
+ Inland
++ General
++ Ezousa Valley

City Life
+ General
+ Walkarounds
+ People
+ Places
Village Life
+ General
+ Walkarounds
+ People
+ Places
+ Polemi Tulip Festival
+ Paphos Carnival

Ancient Places
+ General
+ Bridges
++ Roudia
++ Kelefos
+ Villages
++ Foinikas
++ Evretou
+ Sites
++ Archaeological Park
++ Tomb of the Kings

Rocks and Minerals

Seasonal
+ Christmas
+ Easter

On loading the gallery, you get a list of categories, like the directory.

If you open a category, you either get images, or a list of sub categories

There is only one level of category indentation. After that, you drill down using filters like the directory uses. So Ancient Places -> Bridges will show a list of options on the left, allowing you to filter the displayed thumbnails.

If you click on a thumbnail, it goes full screen and you can then move back and forth through images, as you would expect.

Images can be in more than one category. So a picture of a dog at the Polemi Tulip Festival could turn up in Mammals and Polemi Tulip Festival

Looks fine Dominic, you can tinker with this forever & a day, & still people will not be happy! Launch it & it will sort itself out in the long run ............ if a category starts to fill up with posts then you can always look at breaking it up into sub-categories!

Looking forward to the photo gallery.

I haven't fully studied your design strategy Dominic, but is it to create the sub categories right off? Personally, I would just create the main categories and then add sub categories as they develop and filter through from the main categories, otherwise you may end up with empty sub categories. I may have misunderstood your method, I'm simply drawing on experience with developing databases. I think I'm on the same page as ApusApus! :D

Well, what a lovely thread. A good idea, Aphrodite, to ask for those. It's nice to be able to see so much detail.

I agree with PeteandSylvi that a "like" button would be nice. Could that be done, Dominic? A bit like Facebook whereby you have the smiling/wow/crying etc emojis?
