White Caps on The Pool Today

Post by Mike J »

Another windy one, so another day fishing stuff out of the pool. Most seems to be soil pellets from the erosion going on thanks to the amount of ploughed land that has appeared over the last few years.
I am on the Episkopi Hash and several hashers have told me there is an EU allowance for ploughing land. It is certainly very noticeable how much land, as we hash around the interior away from the sea, has been ploughed up in the few years . What is also very obvious is nothing is planted; it is ploughed and left till the winter rains starts the grass growing again.
I know UK farmers are paid to keep land fallow by the EU but wondered if anyone knows if the EU grant for ploughing is a fact ? Certainly if the amount of soil pellets that are falling on my small area of pool and patio is reflected across Southern Cyprus then such a grant must be causing all kinds of issues for the future.

Cheers

I can't help you with your pellet query, but have a question for you about hash runs. Is there a Limassol hash group? I ask because the last time we visited our favourite abandoned ranch, there were visible signs of a hash run on the floor. The only thing that surprised me was that their appeared to be a pink trail for the girls and a blue trail for the boys. Is this normal in Cyprus?

Yes, The Amathus Hash and they do mark their trails as you describe. It could have also been The Happy Valley Hash again using the same markings.
The Episkopi Hash is one of the last all male hashes left in the world and as we say has saved countless marriages by ensuring that especially retired men give their wives at least one afternoon and evening a week to do what they like . Many are just delighted to have the TV remote for that period !!
