
Forensic investigators examine the scene
A police officer was slightly injured in an explosion outside the Dhekelia Police station in the early hours of Tuesday.
According to the police report, the blast occurred shortly after 3.00 am when a man on a motorcycle approached the police station and hurled a grenade causing the explosion and the injury to the police officer.
The area has been cordoned off and police have begun the search for the assailant.
SBA police are said to be investigating it as a criminal matter and do not suspect terrorism.
“There are scenes of crime investigators there now to find out exactly what caused the explosion. It is being treated as a criminal investigation at the moment,” a spokesman for the bases said.
Britain retains sovereignty over some 99 square kilometres of territory on Cyprus, a colony until 1960. While some of it is accessible only to military personnel, it also includes areas where thousands of Cypriots live.
