Jacaranda trees

Post by LouiseCastricum »

There are a lot of trees in purple blossom this time of the year. Are those Jacaranda trees? Are there also Jacaranda trees with red flowers?

Always around May, those lilac trees came into bloom when we were in Cyprus and yes, I believe they are Jacarandas. The others I recall were with similar leaves but the flowers were a very brilliant deep orange colour. Absolutely beautiful and I do miss seeing them...

We had one in our garden, glorious to look at, but it smelled awful unfortunately.

Yes Louise, the purple ones are Jacaranda, while the red trees are poinciana (Flame of the Forest)

I thoroughly enjoy seeing the beautiful jacarandas in full bloom. Its such a pity they don't last longer.

One of the other beautiful trees in bloom now is the pineapple tree (well, that's what I think of it as, as the flower shape is reminiscent of a pineapple!). It's a Bird of Paradise tree and has lovely pineapple shaped bright yellow flower heads with long red stamens. Very striking.

Thank you Max. I always want to know the names of flowers and plants. And yes Kay I also like the Bird of Paradise tree.

Sorry, but Bird of Paradise looks like that and flowers appear late Autumn... but perhaps you have a pic you can send as I am always interested in nice trees/plants...

Perhaps you mean Strelitzia nicolai, which have flowers now and grow like a banana but can reach 5-10 m height, this one in my garden is 4 years old...

Louise, beautiful photo, but it is like I said before a Royal Poinciana, a wide variety of flowers but always similar foliage. I had a huge one at my last house and it was the shade for 2 cars - but what a mess with leaves and flowers...

Max, sorry for any confusion I inadvertently caused by not mentioning the genus name for easier recognition. The Bird of Paradise flower is, as you pointed out, the Strelitzia. However, the Bird of Paradise tree is a different plant altogether. As far as I'm aware, it is usually also known as Caesalpinia ...

It's amusing walking past this tree when the seed pods pop open and shower seeds around. To me, it's worst attribute is it smells slightly of coconut - which in quantity makes me nauseous. :( As far as OH is concerned, it's worst attribute is the leaf and seed pod litter scattered around for him to clear up.

Never heard about that there are two plants with the same name... but Wikipedia says so :o :o
So Louisa was right as her tree is really a bird of paradise. I wonder which trees are at the Polis campsite as there are many with leaves like poinciana but very pale flowers and growing like mad there.... a wild form perhaps.

On the village road Marathounda a perfect one... without the Jacaranda it could be also in Austria or Switzerland ...
