Getting a bit horticultural.... anyone know what it is for sure?

Post by PhotoLady »

We think it may be: Syringa vulgaris 'Katherine Havemeyer' one of the lilac family...

I photographed it the other day whilst we were trying to locate the old railway track bed route between Knott End and Preesall as a local group of rail enthusiasts are trying to reinstate part of the old line by putting a 2 foot gauge light railway through again.

Can any "flowery" people out there confirm the shrub/tree for me? It appeared to be definitely more of a tree than a shrub or bush....

We were planning on having a blue tree outside the front of the house but since finding this little beauty, I think we've changed our mind, it's gorgeous!

Next time we pass it I will give it a sniff.... I was too busy getting the photo before I ran out of battery life!
Then we shall have to hunt them down and suss out the best place to buy. We have a really nice garden centre by the canal near Garstang but it's very expensive. There's another one much closer to home so will start there first as well as online.

Looks like lilac may be the way to go....

Go for lilac & you should be blessed with loads of butterflies as a bonus!

Yep, deffo a lilac.
For scent and butterflies, not only lilac but also buddleia - but check the flowers for scent before buying/taking a cutting as I don't think all varieties are scented.

Thank you!

I knew there was one that started with "B" but I couldn't for the life of me remember what the rest of the word looked like :-)

As previously stated, it is definitely a lilac, though it doesn't look like Katherine Havemeyer,
As the blossoms fade from lavender blue / pink lilac, it looks a bit like Charles Joly, which is sweetly scented, but there are so
Many hybrids that you will have to trawl the internet to find the one you are after...😊
