DIY wills

Have any of you good people made a will by downloading the forms off the internet? Any recomendations please.

My only recommendation is to find a proper lawyer who specialises in wills and use them.

You can get away with DIY wills in the UK but Cyprus is different. UK citizens resident in Cyprus must stipulate in wills that they want Probabate either under UK Law or Cyprus Law, there is a hell of a difference. I'm not a lawyer just my understanding having resided here for 25 years.

And when you make this decision you have to go to a lawyer in Cyprus, have the statement drawn up, signed, witnessed, sealed, stamped and registered with the courts.

You must also pick a executor for Cyprus but this can be a non Cypriot person.

Think this cost us Euro 300 (150 each).

This has changed now. I have just redone my will with Geoff Stanway, a local lawyer. he said there is no need to deposit will at courthouse etc.

My will was done with my solicitor, and it is held in their offices, it is not deposited at the courthouse

Wayne the Will Man will charge less than a solicitor, highly recommended.

If it is with the courts you are safer, if it is with the lawyer and you outlive him or his buisness then you have a problem and even if all is well and he is still in buisness your executor will have to attend the courts.

Also you would need to trust the lawyer if he keeps the will as if he has had power of atourney and most do, then he can destroy the will and it would all be his.

In answer to the last post on this subject, Wayne Barnett like me is an FCA (Fellow of The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales) and as part of our extensive training before qualification dealing with wills/probate/executorships etc is one of many facets of qualifying as an FCA. I can assure you that Wayne is more than capable of drafting a valid will and has an excellent team to support this work.

Like Jimgym we used Geoffrey Stanway, UK/Cyp lawyer, still practising p/t UK barrister, he does home visits. He redrew our Wills to current Cyp regulations, very reasonably priced for preparing Wills.

If your still alive you could contest things but if your dead who can contest what will is your final will, If your will is with the courts then this is your last will as when you go to leave it at the court they file it as such.

Do you even need a will? I had a general power of attorney from my mother, valid beyond her death until revoked by her heirs. I never needed a certificate of death or inheritance to get access to her assets and close her accounts, just my PoA. She had a yellow slip, but no assets in Cprus. Everything, including property, was in Germany. So there was no problem.
