Turtle Shame

Post by WHL »

No words to describe what happened to that poor turtle, I hope those who carried out this vile act get the full force of the law thrown at them.

It's absolutely sickening. People who hurt defenseless animals are a different level of broken. I really hope the authorities follow through and actually make an example of them for once.

From what I read it was already dead, and they were just playing with the corpse. So at least the turtle didn't actually suffer at their hands. They certainly deserve to be punished though.

Looking at the video , the men pull back a couple of times when they went to pick it up, as thou the turtle was trying to bite them, so im guessing it wasn't already dead,

It would be handy if you included a link to the video.

That is the one Trev posted, in my opinion the way they where holding it and throwing it suggest the turtle was alive.

One thing I read on the Cyprus & East Med Sea Life Facebook group was that it was dead and full of live crabs, so they were banging and throwing it to get the crabs out of it before they put it in their vehicle to remove it.

I have no idea if this is true or not (and if it is, why hasn't it been in the news reports?) but it would explain their behaviour. That said, I still wouldn't condone their behaviour.

That would make sense, why grown men would do that if true.

It's been confirmed that the turtle had been dead a couple of days, but that's it. Hopefully this sort of behaviour won't happen again -

https://cyprus-mail.com/2026/01/22/parl ... rtle-abuse

"The parliamentary environment committee will pursue amendments to introduce explicit penalties for the mistreatment of dead animals, following outrage over a video showing workers abusing the carcass of a sea turtle on a beach in Chloraka.

"While existing laws focus on the protection of live protected species, there is no specific provision governing conduct towards dead animals, even in protected areas."
