“The shelter has operated for the last 40 years on land granted by two to three owners for the volunteers’ needs. Now the owners want their land back,” Irini Diamantopoulou, the shelter’s volunteer and education coordinator, told philenews.

:( This is terrible news for the stray animals in Paphos. There must be something that can be done, to relocate the shelter, surely.

You'd of thought over the 40 years that it's been going, there would be some kind of contingency in place by the people who run it

There was an eviction order in 2004 and a court appearance the animal numbers were 1000, at the time the press said the Church owned the land.

Yeah, I seem to remember that there was a scare that they would have to move many years ago, and they had tried to find new land and had somewhere in mind, but it had fallen through, and then in the end they could stay where they were. But I am going on a vague memory.

Given their location, this was bound to happen sometime, but a solution really needs to be found, both for all the current animals who cannot be turned out into the streets, and for all the future animals, from strays to mistreated ones, who will need a sanctuary. All other shelters are full, what on earth will happen if we lose Paphiakos too?
