Terrible and so frightening.

This one seems to be particularly bad. I could see the glow in the sky from Polemi. The last I heard was that 16 villages had been evacuated. And I have seen videos showing Cypriot houses burning..
There will be a lot of Damage. Let's hope that now it is light that the planes and helicoptors, together with the firefighters on the ground can control it

This was the view through my window yesterday afternoon



flames jumped up everywhere with the strong wind


a couple of helicopters arrived...




but only working around houses and certain spots and they left after a short while perhaps towards the bigger fire at Limassol areas


Anyhow, it is very frightening when it is so close and very strong winds can change the situation within minutes.

After 5.30 the electricity stopped, which was very unpleasant having still 36C at this time of the day.

Luckily it was restored after 9.30PM and aircons working again. My fridges however I had connected with a battery pack in order the food stays OK....

There was another one near Arodes today which was thankfully brought under control.

Max, did the one near you start at the rubbish dump near Agia Varvara? That goes up on a fairly frequent basis.

And now there are reports of another one between Kathikas and Pykni.

Heartbreaking, the destruction of property and loss of life, is truly heartbreaking.

So sorry, poor Cyprus.

Yes exactly, many times bad smell from burned plastic or so is in my area when the wind comes from the direction of the rubbish dump there.

Some more statement from the local press here:

"However, the fire department men, he continued, acted immediately, overreacting. The only active source, he stressed, is inside the landfill where gases and smoke are emitted. He noted that the Department of Environment must act on the issue.

When asked, Mr. Pittokopitis stated that the fire is located within the fenced area of the landfill site but outside the landfill facilities.

At this specific point, as he explained, waste and pruning materials are placed and disposed of in an organized manner and under the control of the landfill. He added that there is a committee that manages them."

Went for a drive through the Limassol fire area this morning. Huge areas of devastation in the countryside. The Electricity Board were out in force too. They were very good after the Polemi / Choulou fire the other year too. There will be drone footage and a film later in the week.

It's all so devastating and heart breaking. It's such a lovely part of Cyprus, I love driving up there and exploring the villages and countryside and hidden gems. And it's outstanding what a large area it covered, how much was lost. I'm dreading the next time I drive up there, though of course that is insignificant compared to those who lost their homes and also to everyone who lives in those villages.
