travel insurance for the over 80s

Post by lefkes »

Finding travel insurance to cover our normal two months trip back to the UK now that I am eighty a bit difficult, tried our normal company who have quoted an arm and leg just for the two months so hoping other members may have other suggestions how they cope with trips back . Any information would be appreciated.

Lefkes, you have not a cat in hells chance, unless you are a zillionaire.

We want to visit our daughter in the USA for two months. We are both in our 80s and in perfect health with no previous problems.( lucky for us of course
BUT........Problems..

1/Our age.
2/Our travel originates from Cyprus ( not the UK )
3/USA is classed as the most expensive medical care in the world.
4/The amount of time we want to spend in the USA.

We where in the US some time ago when my wife had to visit the hospital there,we where not insured,,and the bill,,,well lets leave it at that. :o

Good luck

Definitely tricky at that age, but some providers do specialize. Worth hunting around

Do you have a Revolut account registered here in Cyprus? If so they include travel insurance with Metal plan. There is no age limit, but this doesn't apply if your account is registered in UK.

I guess you have no UK National Insurance number hence the request. There are plenty of insurance companies in the USA that sell year long medical insurance for people who need proof of health insurance to obtain visas to live in a country. They sell to non US citizens as well and don’t have any age limits. Should you need to claim they limit the amount to about $50,000 and the premium is around $500- $800 but at least you have some cover though if travelling to the USA that would probably cover a cut finger ! Given the state of the NHS and the issues they have collecting from non National insurance patients you probably are never going to get charged for healthcare anyway . Just be prepared for a 16hrs plus wait to see a triage nurse at many UK hospitals .Private hospitals used to be the answer but they have long waiting lists now and of course you can’t use them for emergency care .
