Walking Tour Of Geroskipou Shrine Caves

Post by Dominic »

Over the last year or so they have been renovating the Shrine Caves in Geroskipou. You can find them behind St George's Tavern near the St Michael's Hospice Charity Shop. The walkway has been much improved, and illuminations have been added, so it will be interesting to see what it looks like at night. Today's film though, was shot during the day. I was assisted in this film by one of our channel subscribers, so say hello to Tony! He will be signing autographs at the Harbour on Monday morning.

The shrine caves date back to the Cult of Aphrodite and were associated with various somewhat risque festivals. These days they contain votive offerings left by the Christian Faithful. There is also a nearby chapel and a fair amount of cats.

Back in 2019 there was an Art Exhibition here, and you can still see a few remnants of that, but all the information signs have now been removed and replaced with new ones that focus on the local bat population.

You can also see that they are developing the new Business Park nearby. It is nice to see that progressing finally.
