Paphos district court today remanded a 57-year-old man in custody for eight days on suspicion of attempting to murder his 46-year-old wife in Peyia yesterday afternoon.
The court granted the police request for detention, citing the severity of the case and the need for extensive investigation in its early stages, police said.
The victim remains in critical but stable condition at Nicosia General Hospital’s intensive care unit. She underwent initial surgery at Paphos Hospital before being transferred to the capital due to the severity of her injuries.
Police Assistant Director of Paphos, Michalis Nicolaou, said investigators are focusing on family disputes as the primary motive for the shooting.
The incident occurred around 6:00 p.m. yesterday when residents alerted Peyia police station that a man had shot his wife with a hunting rifle outside their home. Officers found the woman with gunshot wounds and she was rushed to Paphos Hospital’s accident and emergency department.
The suspect remained at the scene and was arrested by Peyia police station officers. A state pathologist and members of police headquarters’ forensics unit conducted an examination of the scene last night.
