Pano Arodes To Lara Bay - Part 2

Post by Dominic »

Welcome back to the second part of our drive across the Akamas from Pano Arodes to Lara Bay Area. We ended part 1 by an old pig farm behind Avakas Gorge. We continue from there down towards the coast, but manage to take a wrong turn, and end up taking a very bumpy route indeed.

What an adventure Dominic I understand when you commit to going forward you tend to keep going girding your loins

I remember in the 80s having a hire car and taking a route back to Paphos not on the main road from Kikkos Monastry as the sign said Paphos it started on a dirt track then ended going up and up around clinging to the mountain edge with dusk approaching luckily around a corner which seemed like hours we saw a human with goats who couldn’t speak any English but I managed to understand what he was saying and carried on to join the Troodos Road. Later that evening in the bar of a friends hotel there were some hunters who just couldn’t believe how we negotiated that route in a car without writing the car off

The craziest drive I did was at night when I decided to drive back from Paphos Airport to Polemi via the Ezousa Valley. There is something strangely invigorating about driving along a riverbed with your headlights providing the only light, other than the stars in the sky. The drive up to Kallepeia was even more interesting because the area to the left when you go along the side of the valley was just a black void. In some ways this made it easier as you didn't have the drop to distract you.

The worst experience I ever had though was on the other side of the Ezousa Valley, near Episkopi. We had driven part way down a steep slope on a dodgy track, but it deteriorated, so I turned round and started to head back. That was the plan anyway. But the floor was that horrible white powder which goes like glass when remotely damp, so I couldn't drive forwards. I had to reverse down the track that I previously didn't want to drive down. At some points only 2 or 3 wheels were on the ground as I slowly nudged my way down as my wife shouted instructions outside. At one point she lent in and got her phone, saying she would need it if I went over the cliff. We eventually made it to the bottom, but my poor wife had to spend the next couple of days in bed she was so stressed from it.

I tend to be a bit more careful these days.
