Cyprus' Civil Defence has 2,200 shelters currently available, capable of accommodating 30% of the island's population in case of an emergency, according to spokesperson Panayiotis Liassides. Efforts are underway to increase the number of shelters, especially in urban areas.
Liassides noted that discussions are ongoing with the Church to identify large underground spaces in churches, as well as new developments with underground areas that could serve as protection spaces. The shelters are equipped with basic amenities such as water tanks and toilets, though some still need to be fitted with dry-type, biological toilets.
The shelters are designed for short-term use, intended to protect civilians during bombings or airstrikes. Liassides emphasized that the aim is to eventually provide shelter for 70% of the population, though many would be mobilized for military or vital services during a crisis.
Citizens can contact the Civil Defence at any time via the phone numbers 22403450 and 22403452 to locate the nearest shelter by providing their address and postal code. Notifications to seek shelter will be made through the siren system, which is also used during annual commemorations of the coup and invasion. Citizens are advised to bring water and dry food for short stays in the shelters, though provisions are in place for longer stays if needed.
Liassides reassured the public that Civil Defence is on high alert due to ongoing instability in the Middle East and urged citizens to remain calm in the event of an emergency, as panic could worsen the situation.

It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog.

Re: Cyprus Civil Defence shelters ready for 30% of population
I remember once that a fellow guest at a party, was boasting loudly that he had a nuclear bunker in his garden, a friend we were with replied, 'it's a pity that you'll never get to use it', 'how do you know', the boaster replied, well said our friend, I have a gun, and I know where you live!
The bomb never fell, but our friend did legally own a firearm.

I only hope that if the worst comes to the worst then priority is given to the young. They will be the ones doing all the rebuilding afterwards. Me, I feel perfectly safe up in Polemi. Besides, I know many nooks and crannies around the countryside where we could shelter if push came to shove. Before it got anywhere close to that though I would have put the wife and daughter on a plane back to the UK.
Can't see any of that happening though, and I am certainly not losing any sleep over it whatsoever.

Civil Defence in Cyprus prepared for natural disasters and warfare
Public urged to prepare for emergencies by downloading information and finding closest shelter.
Amid a continuous flow of news reports on hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, wildfires and even war, it is only natural for people to wonder what they can do to protect themselves in an emergency.
“The best practice is prevention and information,” Civil Defence spokesman Panayiotis Liasides said.
“People are worried, and we are informing them about all dangers. It is October and rain is coming, possibly floods. We also have measures one can take in the case of earthquakes and other natural disasters, as well as armed conflicts,” he said.
In the case of natural disasters there is detailed material available in online flyers at https://www.moi.gov.cy/moi/cd/cd.nsf/ho ... n?openform and https://besafenet.net/, Liasides told the Cyprus Mail.
Liasides explained that the air raid shelters scattered around the island are only to be used to take cover from an armed conflict.

The last place i would want to be if there are floods, is in an underground shelter.
