Global IT outage affecting Cyprus; no flight disruptions so far

Post by memory man »

A widespread IT outage that has disrupted major institutions and services globally has also hit Cyprus.

The Cyprus Telecommunication Authority (CYTA) on Friday morning announced that the outage has affected its call centres, stores and digital channels.

“The provision of our products and services is not affected. The issue is being handled in cooperation with the supplier company,” CYTA said in a post on X.

This was caused by a bad update in a Security product ironically called CrowdStrike.

It caused PCs running it to have Blue Screens Of Death. And the way to cure it is a time-consuming reboot into Safe Mode to apply the fix.

I would be very surprised if it directly affected any of your machines.

If you have any shares in the company (Crowdstrike) best sell them while you can!

We live in a world where we rely on computers, the trouble is that they are programmed by man.

Sadly it seems that once we have a major computer glitch, everything grinds to a halt. Plan B it seems, has not been thought through. From airports to supermarkets, they saw problems here in the UK yesterday.

Interesting, but all this chaos only affected Microsoft Computers! Apple Computers and all Apple devices were running as normal....

A friend who works in a well known supermarket, told me that they were unable to process cards until late afternoon, resulting in shopping being left in trolleys, and huge queues as ATMs. I had a quick flash back of 'Open All Hours'

Used to the normal procedure that updates/upgrades were run through a testing procedure - obviously not in this case.
