Agia Kyriaki Chrysopolitissa

Post by Dominic »

The church of Agia Kyriaki Chrysopolitissa lies in the heart of Kato Paphos, and serves many faiths, including Anglican and Catholic. It is surrounded by archaeological remnants of early churches and monasteries, including St Paul's Pillar. They are currently renovating the walkways that run around the exterior of the church, so you are unable to explore the ruins. At least now you can enjoy them from above.

Should you visit the church itself, please remember to dress conservatively and treat the faithful with respect.

The Church was handed over by Bishop George of Paphos (now Archbishop) to the Catholic Parish, who in turn granted access to the Anglican Church.

Following the visit of Pope Benedict, it became a major pilgrimage site, with visitors coming from throughout Europe (mainly due to St Paul’s pillar)

Following his visit Pope Benedict sent Cardinal Vallini and every Bishop and Priest from Rome to view the site, subsequently Many such pilgrimages have occurred.

These pilgrimages in turn raised much needed funds for Archangel Michael Hospice

The walkway is hideous, and needs major restoration which to date has not occurred, nevertheless it is a marvellous site to visit.

Many years ago (circa 25 plus) a road went right up to the Church, once excavated, what you see now resulted.

Great video as allways Dominic

It’s lovely to be able to go there for the 12.00 Mass in English on Christmas Day (they also have the Mass at 10.00 in Latin and 11.00 in Polish). Such a beautiful church. Built by the Venetians c. 1500, I think, in the ruins of the old basilica. The Catholic Church in Cyprus is part of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, which runs the Church in the Levant.
