Cyprus Covid cats can receive unused human vaccines
Cyprus Covid cats can receive unused human vaccines
Human treatments for Covid that remain unused are to be made available for the treatment of cats who are increasingly dying from cat covid or feline infectious peritonitis (FIP), the cabinet announced on Thursday.
The approval was given following a recommendation by the agriculture ministry, which carried out an investigation into the feline deaths “which have greatly increased this year”, the cabinet said.

Re: Cyprus Covid cats can receive unused human vaccines
Have there been any tests to show if a human vaccine would work on a cat?
Re: Cyprus Covid cats can receive unused human vaccines
I assume it's worth a try, surely.

Re: Cyprus Covid cats can receive unused human vaccines
I was told that cats were being infected mainly on the east of the island. Has anyone heard if it's particularly bad around the Paphos area?
Re: Cyprus Covid cats can receive unused human vaccines
Why? As the virus can't be transferred from feline to human, I would imagine that the two viruses are sufficiently different to make the vaccine pointless.

Because if there are plenty of human vaccine lying around, why not give it a go?
Plus what you imagine Dominic, will not be established as fact, unless tried out.

Re: Cyprus Covid cats can receive unused human vaccines
There's a possibility the human vaccine might make the cats worse, rather then better?
Re: Cyprus Covid cats can receive unused human vaccines
Where did you get that information from ??
Trev..
Re: Cyprus Covid cats can receive unused human vaccines
I didn't get it from any where, I was replying to firefly who said if there's plenty of human vaccine lying about then give it to the cats, and i was thinking , what if it harms the cats rather then cure them.
Re: Cyprus Covid cats can receive unused human vaccines
Surely to goodness they must have some reasonable assumption that this would be beneficial to cats. I would assume that the Government Vets have been in contact with the phamaceutical firms that make these vaccines?
Re: Cyprus Covid cats can receive unused human vaccines
Just hope no one thinks of using vaccines that have been prepared for various animal diseases on humans.

Re: Cyprus Covid cats can receive unused human vaccines
If the cats are going to die anyway, it stands to reason that it won't do any harm to try the vaccine, even in a watered down form.
After all, someone had to be a guinea pig for the human vaccine.

Re: Cyprus Covid cats can receive unused human vaccines
I have just read in The Independent, that Cyprus vets are treating sick cats with a Covid drug used for humans. It says that treatment started on 8th August.
Strange that it hasn't been mentioned on PL.

Don't know if this works, but it's from another UK paper.

Re: Cyprus Covid cats can receive unused human vaccines
This is the key portion:
The disease is unrelated to Covid-19 and cannot be contracted by human beings. However, the active ingredient in anti-Covid medication Lagevrio, molnupiravir, has proven effective in treating cats who’ve contracted FIP.
Now, why hasn't it been discussed on PL? Probably because the media are making it out to be a much bigger thing than it actually is. We've visited the vet a few times over the last couple of weeks, as Patch has ringworm. I don't think the topic of Cat COVID has come up once in all those visits.

So in effect the answer to the topic is, yes, they can.
Why didn't you bring up the topic with your vet Dominic?
