There is the problem you have decided on Mr Hunters innocence with out knowing all the details of the case, Unlike you I trust the court to give a fair hearing to both sides and reach a desicion based on the facts presented to them,
This case is going to be decided by judges rather than by a jury.

For me, that fact alone puts a question mark over whether this is a fair trial whatever the outcome...

Personally i would trust a panel of judges, who understand evidence and facts over a jury who are easily swayed by fancy talking lawyers, I say this because i have a nephew who is a QC back in the UK, I have attended a few of his cases as an observer, and i have seen how jurys are easily swayed,

Verdict on Friday on Briton who killed terminally ill wife in Paphos

A British pensioner accused of murdering his terminally ill wife in their retirement home in coastal Paphos two years ago is set to hear his verdict later on Friday.

David Hunter, 76, was charged with the premeditated murder of his wife Janice, 74, in December 2021 even though he maintains that he had acted out of love and mercy.

His defense lawyer argued that no one throughout the trial was able to give a testimony that indicated any history of violence or ill-will between the Hunters.

A visibly shaking Hunter had told the Paphos criminal trial how heart-breaking the decision was to end his teenage sweetheart’s suffering from devastating blood cancer.

He described how his wife was reduced to wearing nappies, was covered in skin lesions and could no longer stand from her devastating blood cancer.

After suffocating her, Hunter took pills and a bottle of alcohol to kill himself.

However, his attempt to kill himself was thwarted after his brother – whom he called after killing Janice – informed British police which in turn alerted Interpol in Cyprus.

David Hunter found guilty of manslaughter

After an arduous 19 months, David Hunter was on Friday found guilty of manslaughter.

The judge said there was no proof that Hunter had premeditated the murder, and as such, was found guilty of manslaughter.

The development relieves Hunter, now 75, of a life sentence in jail.

His lawyers hugged each other, embracing Hunter who shook their hands and thanked them.

Hunter appeared at Paphos criminal court looking harrowed and wearing all black. Close friends of Hunter and his former neighbours came to the hearing as a show of support.

His defence has argued this was a case of mercy killing, claiming his wife had begged him incessantly for weeks to end her life as she was suffering from her cancer diagnosis, that left her house-bound and depressed.

He previously told Paphos court he did what he felt he had to do, but rubbished the idea that it was pre-meditated.

His defence claimed he snapped in the moment, after watching his wife suffer and hearing her crying and begging for weeks, arguing this was a case of manslaughter.

Taking the stand at court two months ago, he said “I would never in a million years taken my wife’s life if she hadn’t asked me. She wasn’t just my wife she was my best friend.”

David Hunter convicted of manslaughter of terminally ill wife

David Hunter, a 76-year-old retired miner from Ashington, Northumberland, has been found guilty of manslaughter for the death of his seriously ill wife, Janice Hunter, aged 74, at their home near Paphos in December 2021.

Despite being initially tried for murder, Hunter was cleared of the murder charge.

During the trial, Hunter maintained that his wife’s death was an act of assisted suicide, claiming that Janice, who was suffering from blood cancer, had pleaded with him to end her misery. His lawyer, Michael Polak from Justice Abroad, argued that the act was not pre-planned and that Hunter acted spontaneously out of compassion due to the excruciating pain his wife was enduring.

The three judges at the district court in Paphos found Hunter not guilty of murder but guilty of manslaughter. The verdict brought relief to Hunter, who hugged his legal team and expressed his happiness and elation to the BBC.

The case initially involved a plea deal, wherein Hunter would admit to manslaughter, but authorities made a legal U-turn, leading to the murder trial. Despite the emotional toll of the proceedings, Hunter stood firm in court, tearfully asserting that he would have never taken his wife’s life if she hadn’t explicitly asked him to do so. He emphasized their close bond and how his wife’s pleas for relief from her agony had grown more intense with each passing day.

Ultimately, Hunter succumbed to his wife’s plea and suffocated her when she became “hysterical.” His act of compassion was driven by the hope that she might change her mind, given how deeply he loved her. After the tragic incident, he even attempted to take his own life but was unsuccessful.

With sentencing scheduled for 27 July, Hunter’s lawyer is hopeful that he might receive a suspended sentence, allowing him to return to the UK to live with his daughter. Hunter’s friend, Barry Kent, who fundraised to support his legal costs, expressed relief at the verdict.

well, that is indeed good news. We can hope only now that the judges consider that he has already been punished sufficiently by his long detention. My fingers are crossed for him.

Sentence for Hunter trial to be heard on Monday

A short hearing at Paphos criminal court on Thursday left little hint at the outcome of David Hunter’s sentencing.

After hearing the defence and prosecution present their mitigation arguments, the judges said they would hold off from making a decision until Monday.

“We have our fingers crossed,” Hunter’s lawyer Michael Polak said. His team are seeking a suspended sentence for Hunter, citing his old age as he is 76, the fact that he has no previous criminal record and the fact that the motive for killing his wife was to end her suffering.
