Amiantos Mine can be found in the Troodos Mountains. It used to be the largest asbestos mine in Europe, but now it is gathering rust. For obvious reasons you cannot explore the mine itself, but there is a nearby visitor centre and nature reserve. Also, nestled in the hills you will find the old workers' quarters and the hospital that looked after them. Let's take a look.

Re: Amiantos Mine
I found some old photos, showing under which conditions women and girls had a hard job there, sitting on the ground and separating with little hammers the asbestos from the rocks...

Actually shocking as it is not that long time ago, (after 1950) how they transported the large rocks on their backs...

They built the famous TB-Sanatorium not far away at Kyperounda village ca 80 years ago and I am quite sure they had also treated ill worker from the Amiantos mine there.
Interesting source with old photos at their website and how the countryside looked then....(where are the trees?)
