Establishing a DNA database for dogs would put an end to the island’s rising number of strays, according to Andreas Himoni who runs Vom Chimonis Haus in Cyprus and New Jersey, USA.

I must be running in first gear today. I don't understand how this is going to work when there are already a many-hundred-odd indeterminate strays and ferals wandering around the island, possibly tens of thousands. I would hazard a guess that there are many wanted and the useful hunting dogs with a very mixed DNA as well most of the stray and feral ones will also have. It would be akin to issuing ID cards without a number.
