Over fifty per cent reduction in Paphos road fatalities

Post by memory man »

Four fatal accidents occurred the district of Paphos in 2022, according to police spokesperson Michalis Nikolaou.

This signified a 50 per cent reduction, Nikolaou said speaking to CNA, as the fatal accidents in the province in 2021 amounted to nine.

This reduction is due to the measures aimed at reducing collisions, carried out by traffic police on the Paphos road networks daily, Nicolaou said.

Glad that the police think that their extra measures on a daily basis is helping to reduce road accidents and fatalities around/or in Paphos. Mind you, I've also seen some pretty wild driving at times.
I hope they (the police) will continue.

It's probably a statistical blip. With a base of only 9 deaths, you would expect a wide proportional variation year to year. The trend over several years is what really matters.

When figures are as low as this, then pretty much every figure will be a blip. So the term is meaningless in this context.

It's not meaningless at all. If a figure is close to the long-term average or fits the long-term trend, then it isn't a blip. A large year-on-year variation like this is likely a statistical blip.

And no one's being negative - it's a good thing that fewer people died. However, I don't think the police can fairly claim that the reduction is due to their actions:
