Hopefully they don't "butcher" the palm trees not too much....

This is the time of year when palm trees are usually cut back, before the winter storms. The problem with them is that they usually grow very tall and are quite shallow rooted, some times getting blown over in strong winds. The trunks are also incredibly heavy, so are quite lethal when they fall. The ones by the harbour don't look as healthy as some I have seen which have larger, denser crowns. Maybe too much concrete around them?

They need to be cut back as the lower foliage dies off and looks awful. For power line safety the electricity board cut them back to a single spike, within a couple of weeks that will produce new clean growth.
