Star/planet in the east.

For the past couple of nights we have had friends round for a glass ( or two ) of wine on our patio.We,ve noticed a very bright star to the east of the island.This seemed to be the topic of conversation as to what it was.Can anyone with a little astronomy knowledge help identify this as to what it actually is?

Jupiter has been its closest to earth for 50 odd years. It is visible in the south east throughout the evening and very bright
