Connection hassle no more: EU agrees single mobile charging port
Plugging one's mobile phone could soon be less of a hassle for millions of European consumers after EU countries and lawmakers agreed on Tuesday (June 7) to a single mobile charging port for mobile phones, tablets and cameras in a world first. ...

I commented on an article that it's about time...
Maybe we will soon be able to do away with the box of bits of wires and connections that we don't recall which device they belong to but won't throw them away, just in case.
We have about 5 USB connectors that get used regularly and 4 of them go with us when we travel overseas.

I have always seen the current Apple connectors as being more robust than other manufacturers designs, the lightning connector being an example of something which is a much slicker design and can be inserted either way around, as opposed to the clumsierType C connectors which will have to incorporated in the future.
If standardisation is such a big deal then why does the EU not standardise mains supply plugs. Even 2 pin wall plugs vary in size across the EU and manufacturers have never been forced into a single standard design fitting with the same diameter "prongs".

No, USB C connectors can be inserted either way round.

Dont think so?

Worth noting that iPad Pros have a USB C connection, so Apple can’t think they are that bad. And yes, you can put them in either way, and they are more robust than the Apple ones.

Will be interesting to see how the manufacturers of phones, tablets and laptops in UK, EU and China react.
If they want to sell these rechargeable goods something or someone has to give way.

I get what Apple says with regard to stifling innovation, as the lightning connector was groundbreaking in its small way. However, I think wireless connection is the way forward and that further innovation in physical connectors will be much slower, plus environmental concerns have to come first. The idea of thousands of tonnes of unnecessary electrical waste being produced is enough to sway my opinion. Good move, EU, and yes, let's do the plugs too.
