The red plates you see so many of during the off season periods are lease cars which are now available here.

How to do that? All they know is who rented the car. That isn´t necessarily who drove it.

Whoever rented the car will be responsible. It is their duty to ensure it gets used properly.

The person who hires the vehicle is responsible even if they do not drive it.
A lot of hire cars are driven by people who have crashed their own vehicle, the insurer gives them a hire car until it is repaired.

Back in the UK, the car rental company's insist on a credit card from you,
they then hold an amount on the car , until you hand it back to cover for damage or traffic fines,
the company I usually use don't ask for a card from me because im a member, but they have my card details,
and on arriving back to Cyprus I have had an email from them telling me, they have deducted X amount, because I have had a parking/speeding fine,
the Cyprus rental company's should be made to do this over here, problem solved.

Most insurance company's have their own courtesy cars, and do not use rental cars.

I said most have their own cars, if all their cars are out, then they will reluctantly hire outside cars, it makes more economic sense to have their own.

Yes I agree, but the next time I see a red plate driving dangerously, I will still be wondering if it is a tourist or a local person.

Don't forget that many tourists drive on the right, back in their countries, this could contribute to the dodgy driving you see, personally I haven't noticed red plates being driven any worse then local cars.

Anything which improves road safety is welcome! One of the dangers of rental car drivers is the possible fact that they don't know where they are going... this leads to erratic driving and sudden right or left turns or just dawdling in the middle of the road..

I think that sums up the majority of drivers on the cypriot roads not just hire cars, I tend to agree with WHL in that I have not particularly seen red plates driven any worse than localy registered cars in fact often better. 8-)
I started off with nothing and have most of it left !

When our daughter passed her test in the UK her driving instructor told her not to put P plates on her car, as it encouraged bullying from irresponsible car drivers.
Don't really know how to say this as I hate generalising. However, single, male 20 to 60 year old drivers in red plate cars, tearing along, overtaking on solid white lines or flashing their headlights inches from your rear bumper as you are adhering to the speed limit, are a real danger on the roads in Cyprus. We live near the main airport road, and these are hire car delivery drivers.

I don't have a problem with giving a rental company my card as long as they are kosher,

What happens if you bring a car back with damage, how does the rental company, bill you for the damage?

When I last hired a car in the UK a few years ago, most of the big car rental co's were stipulating that renters must leave a £1,000 amount on their debit card . It was refunded to your card if the car was returned undamaged. It maybe more now.
It certainly made me drive ultra cautiously..to avoid any accident.

Depending on what insurance you have on your own vehicle policy some will cover you for hire cars if not automatically you can get cover for a week or two weeks or whatever at additional cost if you speak to your insurer

Most big rental companys ask for around 3 to 4 hundred on your card, if you don't take their full insurance,
The companys that ask for a 1000 or more are in fact the smaller dodgy companys, they ask this large amount to pressure you to take out their insurance,
A few years ago my daughter rented a small car when she arrived at the companys office near Heathrow, they wanted 1500 deposit on her card , the problem was she only had about a grand on her card, so she had no option but to pay for their exopedant insurance,
There is one company who you should stay way clear off, you will usually find them at the front of your search they offer very low rates, compared to the others, but when you bring the car back, they will batter you with every tiny scratch they can find on the car,
