Mandria square rejuvenation completed

The rejuvenation of the central square and adjacent roads in Paphos’ Mandria village was recently completed and delivered to the public, Paphos District Governor Mary Lambrou said on Saturday.

The total cost of the project reached €764,990, with the amount being covered by the Paphos District Administration’s state development budget.

According to Lambrou, the completion of the project has resulted in the village’s centre being greatly improved, while also being upgraded with new parking and event spaces.

Lambrou also noted that there are already a number of cafes and taverns in the centre of the community, which are visited by many locals and visitors.

Moreover, landscaping and tree planting have further improved the area.

The project started in 2021 and was recently completed.

Later this year, Mandria’s main community building will be renovated in a major way, allowing the building to be used as a cultural centre, which will also be able to service adjacent communities and villages.

The renovation has an estimated cost of approximately €405,000 and is expected to be completed by 2023.

Yes, we've been there a few weeks ago for lunch in one of the tavernas, but we were surprised that the finish of the new square was very bland, just masses of new concrete with angled white lines. To the right of where the picture was taken. Maybe can be used for parking sometime. Plus two angled smallish flowerbeds. The square seemed to lack a central feature to draw the eye, such as a sculpture or some more new trees to give shade when they mature.

No, not when we went. But there were a lot of long, white parallel lines like the ones in the picture, but away to the right hand end of the square. It wasn't clear what their intended purpose was. But they weren't painted like conventional parking spaces.
Time will tell.
But the normal parking area is still there on the left hand side as you enter the village.

The square is just to the right side of the Cyprus Mail photo, as below. It's paved, but as Dee said, very bland. Hopefully it will look better once the trees have matured, but there's only a few trees. It could have done with more greenery and benches and some sort of feature - like replacing the old fountain.

There is some parking at the back of the square, you turn right near the fish & chip shop then turn up in front of the hairdressing salon. I've only been once but the white lines closer to the square puzzled me too.

When all the sodding dust has gone I will do an article on it. There are a few things I am waiting to photograph at the moment.

I have heard that the areas within the painted white lines are going to be individually allocated to the restaurants for outside dining-but I have no official confirmation Can't be for car parking-you couldn't get to them for the metal"posts"!

There are white lines at the back of the square too, which you can park on, with access through the side road

We went to the chippy tonight. Excellent meal and the batter on the fish was just the right thickness. I took some photos whilst we were walking from the car to the chippy.
The original car park on the left was almost empty. A few local 4x4s were parked on the newly painted double yellow lines opposite Yiannis,(Klimataria Taverna)
We turned right and went round the back, parking near the chippy, at the back of one of the other tavernas. It looks as if there are lots of additional parking spaces so parking should not be a problem. There is a lot of space on the square and local children were playing.

Be very careful parking in front of these metal thingies. I very nearly put my car (not the one shown) into 1st gear. You cannot see them over your bonnet. (and that was after 1 coke zero)

Already, the chip shop has added tables and chairs in their allotted area. The way the markings have been done means that no single taverna can take over the square. (hopefully)

We think it is far better than it was before. There was a lack of parking and we often ended up parking on what was waste ground which is now a proper car park. The square can be utilised for events and the white lines are supposed to be for tavernas who wish to put extra tables out on the square. It may look a bit bare but can be improved. Plus, it has been done before Mandria and the surrounding area become part of Gerriskipou authority.
